Listen, the markets usually donât reach a turning point until the maximum sentiment is reached â either bullish or bearish. A good way to measure an investorâs sentiment is net money flow into funds (such as mutual funds and ETFs). People can make predictions, but itâs where they invest money that matters the most. During the dot-com bubble, the market didnât reach the top until there was a massive inflow that ended the bubble. Then it went sliding for two years until more money went out of the market during the third quarter more than ever. That was when the market bottomed out. You can see it in the chart below: You may also notice that the 2007-09 financial crisis bottomed out when there was a new record of outflow (on the far right side of the chart above). What about the pandemic crash and the bubble that followed? The market soared once there was a massive outflow in the first quarter of 2020, or the beginning of the pandemic. Then it topped out when there was a huge inflow in 2021 â it happened approximately 10% before the marketâs top. This happens repeatedly in the stock market. If you pay attention carefully, you can see the latest reading on June 14th in the chart above. It is rising. I am not going to guess if the market is going up or down from here.
