I think teaching by example is one of the best ways to learn. That is why I like to break down in detail some of the trades I have made so you can see exactly how they worked. This is especially useful when it comes to things we are not used to, and for most people, âselling optionsâ are definitely a new topic that takes some time to understand. The concept of trying to collect option premium is something I feel every trader should have a grasp of.  It is one of the few times in your trading journey where you will actually have the odds stacked a little in your favor. Trading is hard enough, I donât know about you, but I will take every little edge I can get! Here is how the basic strategy works for me⦠I want to find strong stocks in uptrends, and sell options that are below the current stock price. As long as the stock stays above the price I sold the option on â I am a winner! If it goes below that level, my trade will turn into a loser. But here is the deal⦠most stocks that are in an uptrend, tend to stay in an uptrend, right?  If you sell options 10% lower than the stock is right now, would you generally agree that is a good bet? (HINT: It is a great bet!) Let me walk you through an example trade I just wrapped up on Friday last week. I sent out the following note to my Wall Street Bookie members a few weeks ago: I then walked them through how I set up the following trade: Quick note⦠you always want to sell the more expensive option and buy the cheaper one if you want to capture option premiums (I teach this all the time, donât worry if it doesnât make sense yet!) Here is a price chart to show you what I thought at each point during the trade. By the way, one of my favorite things about this style of trading is that I donât need to âbabysitâ my trading. I will typically be in this trade for at least a week, so I have plenty of time to let it develop. If you notice in the chart above, the BTU trade actually went against me for a few days. This stupid stock dropped about 20% shortly after I got into it. The stock market makes âmean movesâ like this sometimes. When I am selling option premium, I have the confidence and ability to ride out temporary swings against me, which is exactly what happened in the case above. If I were in the stock or calls directly, I would have been a loser (I actually did have calls on this trade, and I did lose on them! grrrrr) By selling the options, however, I simply let time continue to work for me and then when the stock finally rebounded for a few days I, was able to lock up a great win. Of course, here is what the email update to my members looked like so everyone knows what my plan was: And then again, with an app alert before I decided to close this out: When it comes to selling options, you can only make 100% profit (that would be 100% of the amount you collected when you set the trade up) On Friday, this trade was worth only $.05. I received $.60 when I set it up, so there wasnât much more I could make on it. Risk/reward tells me to lock in the win, so I did! Here is the math on how that worked out: As you see in the account screenshot above, I âborrowedâ 38 contracts, sold them to someone else and received $.60 each = I received $2280 on the day I set this up. When the contracts were $.05, I bought them back (90% cheaper than I sold them) and paid back the person I âborrowedâ from originally. The difference between $.60 - $.05 = $.55, so that means I made $2090 profit on the amount I started with. Pretty neat âtrickâ for just a few days' worth of work, huh? ð I typically make several [new trades like this every month](. I just set one up on SNOW (one of my favorite stocks to sell options on) last week.
