Smith said at a meeting last month that low pay was an issue. "Trying to hire at $22 an hour, you're never going to see another person again walk through those doors. That's it," Smith said. Mayor Ellen Anderson Buck is now trying to secure police coverage for the city of around 1,000 people because she said the current department will only be on duty until Aug. 24.
