Olmert served as Prime Minister of Israel from 2006 to 2009. During his tenure, he led the country in navigating several hot button issues that are as relevant today as they were back then. In 2006, he led the country during the Second Lebanon War, and in 2009, he oversaw a ground invasion in Gaza with Operation Cast Lead. As tension and conflict in the region today reach a boiling point, many in the international community are calling for revisiting the two-state solution framework, something Olmert worked hard to achieve at the Annapolis Conference in 2006. Olmert will be speaking alongside Dov Weissglas, Chair of the Executive Committee of University of Haifa and former Director-General of Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office under Ariel Sharon. In his role as Director-General of Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office, Weissglas served as a diplomatic delegate for negotiating with U.S. National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Weissglas was one of the key architects of the Israeli disengagement from Gaza. After his term finished in 2004, he continued to act as a special adviser to the Prime Minister for the rest of Sharon’s term, and he remained in this role under Olmert until his resignation in June 2006.
