Last night at dinner, I had an epiphany. I’ve been looking for some peace and quiet, a respite from the hustle and bustle, the inevitable forward momentum of time, a place both serene and suspended, that lies outside social pressures and conventions. The classic coffee shop isn’t enough—yesterday I sat typing away at my laptop next to someone who was compulsively oversharing details about her personal life on the phone, as though no one could hear her (spoiler alert: I could hear her). It occurred to me last night that the safest place, the place where I could finally know stillness and escape, is an escape room. I don’t want to actually try to escape; I just need to visit an escape room to hang out and get some work done. What if being inside an escape room is itself the ultimate escape? That’s enough philosophy for now. It’s time to talk about the stories! The stories today cover everything from a bakery run by monks in the forests of Michigan, the wonders of the Mexican seasoning Tajín, the growing trend of mushroom cocktails, the yogurt company that will pay you $50,000 to move to Iceland, and finally, the best Airbnbs for solo travelers! Wow, it seems that my quest for the simple life happens to be very in line with today’s stories. I guess I’m just tapped in! [-Ned Riseley, Senior Copywriter]( [ [( Travel [] [A Bakery in the Woods of Michigan Run By Silent Monks]( Need I say more? There’s really nothing more I can say than, there is a group of (largely silent) monks living on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan, led by a monk named Father Basil, that make delicious baked goods. They make their own butters, jams, marmalades, as well as snickerdoodles, brittles, fruitcakes, cinnamon rolls, and gingerbread pancake mix. Learning more about The Jampot and the delicious baked goods they make has given me hope. [] [Men of the cheesecloth]( [( [( FOOD & DRINK [] [Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Tajín]( If you aren’t enjoying the Mexican seasoning blend Tajín, I’m sorry but you’re missing out. Well, not to worry, because we can give you a crash course on how to enjoy this amazing flavor, whether you like it on corn or ice cream or in a michelada… or in your coffee! That’s right, you could put this in your coffee, and we wouldn’t blame you. [] [Sign me up]( [( *Sponsored Ads List [( cannabis [] [Can I Interest You in an Adaptogenic Cocktail?]( Mushrooms are really important to me because one time, in the middle of the day on a Saturday, I spontaneously sauteed a bunch of mushrooms with butter and garlic, put them in a bowl and turned on the television to a scene in a movie which Isabelle Huppert happened to be doing the exact same thing. I’m really tapped in when it comes to mushrooms, needless to say, and I’m excited to read more about the trend of putting mushrooms in cocktails! These are cocktails that will turn you into a beautiful forest creature, cocktails that incorporate Ll kinds of ingredients, like lavender, celery, brandy, and everyone’s favorite little adaptogenic wonders. The brand is looking to explore the ways that our priorities have shifted in recent years to incorporate a more simple and grounded relationship to daily life. Do you have what it takes to live a simpler life and document all of it for the internet, all while being sponsored by a yogurt company?! Wait, is this my dream job? [] [Learn more]( [( [( travel [] [The Best Airbnbs for a Solo Adventure]( Whether or not a yogurt brand sponsors your pivot to living like a monk who bakes muffins in the forest, you can always rent an Airbnb solo and pay your own way towards some rest and relaxation. We have a minimalist cabin in Joshua Tree where you can stargaze and take a bath outside. We have a floating cottage in Sausalito (that sounds like an indie band name from the Bush years). We have a sailboat floating in Nantucket Harbor. We even have a very chic, mildly rococo loft in Gramercy Park. This makes me wanna book a trip.
