I’m here to remind you that even if you’re completely zoning out while staring at your computer thinking, “I have looked at every single meme that has ever been made, now what?”—you have other options. For instance, you could take a page out of my book and get to work becoming what is colloquially known as “a character.” I have decided that at this point in my life (history, etc.), it’s time to get a little bit eccentric, stop caring so much, and craft a bit of a persona. Maybe it’s because Russian Doll is back and I have been wondering how Natasha Lyonne cultivated her very specific and honestly unthinkable accent, but I am inspired by the figure of the loveable eccentric. Perhaps it’s the greatest liberating act, a way to care less and embrace the mystery of the universe. There are all types of eccentric local characters you could become. If you live in a rural place, you could become a grizzled antisocial off-the-grid type, who makes teas out of foraged herbs and goes to sleep with the sun. If you live in a bustling city, you could become a Falstaffian life-of-the-party type who wanders around downtown in a long coat with birds on your shoulder, striking up unusual conversations with everyone you meet. If you live in the suburbs, you could just like… forget to mow your lawn and wait for the neighbors to start gossiping. I don’t know, it’s up to you! Today’s stories include underground Mexican swimming holes, Alton Brown’s new take on the chicken Parm (and other recipes), a vintage upstate train that’s coming ‘round the mountain once again, and finally… drumroll, please… a sale from Brooklinen. Have a wonderful weekend and maybe surprise yourself or something! - [Ned Riseley, Senior Copywriter]( [ [( travel [] [Take a Dip Underground in the Yucatán]( I thought my dream was to live in New York forever and die with a MetroCard in my hand yelling about real estate, but maybe my actual dream is to spend every day swimming in a breathtakingly beautiful underwater cavern in Mexico. These caves look truly magical, and Thrillist takes a deep dive on what makes them so special, their connection to the local culture, the stakes of their preservation, and how to visit. [] [Dreamy]( [( [( food & drink [] [Alton Brown Has Reached the Final 'Good Eats' Chapter]( The iconic chef Alton Brown is releasing the fourth installment of the Good Eats cookbook series, where he updates classic dishes and debuts recipes that he never used on his long-standing television series. He even shared his chicken Parm recipe from the book with us. Brown’s recipe helps the at-home chef avoid some of the dreaded pitfalls of an at-home Parm, such as “soggy breading” and gummy cheese. Just reading about the relaunch of the Hudson River Rail Excursions program has made me want to order some hooch on the rocks, lay a tartan blanket over my legs, and stare out the window of the Hickory Creek, saying things like, “Well, I’ll be! It sure is good to make tracks from the Apple and enjoy some giggle juice on the ol’ chugga-chugga!” That is how people used to talk.
