I am really glad to see you and just want to say: thank you for being here. We’ve been through a lot together, and we’re still just trekking ahead, and that’s a miracle! Even if it doesn’t feel very exciting or noteworthy, I’m here to tell you, it actually is! Yesterday, I was thinking about just how insane it is to have had to adjust to this year, to have had to amend so many of my expectations and find some semblance of day-to-day normalcy when that felt impossible at times. And we’re all doing SOMETHING. Some of us are on a first name basis with Vanna White and eating Rice-A-Roni for every meal. Some of us are on the Peloton morning to night, buying stock in Gamestop, and learning to speak Finnish. The point is, whether you’ve become a mover-and-shaker or a virtuosic couch potato, you’re all doing SOMETHING, and right now? Especially right now, as we approach almost a year of this, that is something to applaud. There is no such thing as a waste of time, if it’s what you need to be doing right now to feel sane: You are nailing it! Okay I’ll get off my motivational speaker pedestal, and let you know about all the articles today. First up we have an article about Black-owned spirits and wines...one about the go-to winter escape for Midwesterners...a recipe for Cape Verdean Kale Soup...some of the first high-res images of MARS taken by Perseverance...and finally, a new episode of Send Foodz in which Tim and David speak to Tayshia Adams, the most recent Bachelorette who found love while trapped in a La Quinta Resort in Palm Springs during one of the hottest summers in Southern California on record! (I love Tayshia) I am off to make a pasta and sit in my backyard (humble brag) pretending it’s spring even though there’s still dirty snow everywhere. Am I becoming an optimist? WHAT THE F***???!!!! Have a good weekend please, [-Ned Riseley, Newsletter Contributor]( [ [( drinks [] [The Essential Black-Owned Spirits and Wines You Need To Try Right Now]( I have developed some pretty standardized drinking habits over quarantine, and I am due for a change! I pretty much just buy the same bottle of Chardonnay once a week from the same liquor store and pour the same amount of it into the same glass every night. Well, now that I have this list of some delicious spirits and wines from Black-owned companies to try, I can add some variety to my liquor cabinet AND support Black-owned businesses at the same time. I’m especially intrigued by “Other People’s Pinot” and “Ashanta Wines.” And don’t even get me started on the tequila and the elegant RYE. You’re gonna love this list! [] [Read more!]( [( *Sponsored Ads List [( travel [] [The Black Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Joy]( The HILLS HAVE EYES. But in a good way. Like, beautiful, warm, inviting eyes. Okay, that didn’t really give a good impression. I’m gonna try again. This article is all about the Black Hills and how they are the ultimate Midwestern escape. It’s a magical South Dakotan oasis that looks like a cross between the wild west and an Enya music video (Before you think that’s a dig—I love Enya and I defy anyone to speak ill of her gentle, velvet hymns). The Black Hills are truly beautiful, and there is so much outdoor magic to explore there. You can hit up the casino, get in a bar fight at the saloon, [scale the faces of Mt. Rushmore]( (you actually can’t do that), snowmobile, ski...you name it! If you need me, I will be staring at “The Devil’s Bathtub” while listening to Enya. [] [Escape!]( [( [( food & drink [] [So You Wanna Make Cape Verdean Kale Soup?]( Well then you’re gonna have to go through me. But luckily, I’m very nice and I have this delicious recipe from chef Yemisi Awosan that I’m very willing to share! It is gonna really spice up your usual menu and provide some extra comfort as we make that final push towards the spring. I’ve been wanting to skip the Progresso and make some of my own soup, so maybe I’ll have to try this one myself. Kale and linguica AND chorizo?! Read this article by Kat Thompson to learn more about Awosan and the recipe. You’re gonna love it. [] [Soup time!]( [( *720x300 Ad Banner [( backyard observatory [] [Move Over Annie Leibovitz, it’s Perseverance!]( I went and saw The Martian in theaters alone, so I’m a little disappointed that none of these pictures include Matt Damon building a greenhouse and going slowly insane in a terrarium, but I have to hand it to the people at NASA: this is pretty dang cool. The rover Perseverance is setting up shop on the red planet and taking some absolutely beautiful shots of the sandy, desolate topography. I will now set to work doing the work I was always meant to do: photoshopping Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting into the pictures that NASA took. How ya like them apples?! [] [Look, it’s Mars!]( [( [( youtube [] [Tim and David Try Tayshia Adams’s Favorite LA Spots]( Will you accept this rose? This week on “Send Foodz” Tim and David are joined by none other than the Bachelorette herself, Tayshia Adams. She brought with her a buffet of flavors and more importantly, her skills in mixology. They indulge in everything from her favorite authentic Mexican spots to messy barbecue ribs. Don’t miss Tim and David get full on delicious food and some Bachelorette secrets.
