That’s right, I’m one of those people. I’ve loved having time to myself, I feel lucky to be able to stay home, and I relish the fact that I no longer have to run into acquaintances from my past on the subway and make smalltalk about what it’s like to work for Gymboree Corporate for 17 train stops. Sure, there are a lot of things I do miss, but most of the time I just pretend I’m a preternaturally allergic child, or that I’m a character on MTV’s True Life: I’m a Competitive Eater, and everything’s fine. “Just pretend that you’re getting adult homeschooled...by God,” I say to myself as I defrost yet another package of chicken thighs and spend fifteen minutes imagining a synth rock musical retelling of the Patty Hearst kidnapping that’s actually an allegory for my time at home. Thank God I also have Thrillist to keep me dissociating and dreaming in a more wholesome, fun, and educational way. Shall I give you a rundown of today’s stories? You have no choice. We have one about Tiny Bodega, an online resource that helps you find POC-owned brands. Then there’s a list of some drink recipes for Super Bowl Sunday. Then there’s an article about a chance to win $100,000 if you help Chobani come up with a new coffee creamer flavor...30 books that you’re going to want to check out in 2021...and finally, some gourmet meal kits from Goldbelly to impress your lover (or yourself) on Valentine’s Day. So all of that humble bragging about how I’m actually good at social distancing was all a build-up to the real confession, which is that today, I’ve hit my limit and I’m starting to descend into madness. It’s like the scene in The Shining when Danny sees the dead twins, only I’m the twins’ babysitter who’s trying to get them to settle in for a nap. Or it’s like the scene when Jack Nicholson kisses the woman who just got out of the tub and promptly turns into a decaying witch, only I’m the hotel maid who’s like, “I need to clean this room now, guys.” Or...it’s like when Shelley Duvall sees the person in the bear costume in flagrante delicto with the guy in a tuxedo, only I’m there too and I’m like, “Shelly Duvall, are you okay? I loved you in 3 Women.” I have to go now. Have a great weekend! Ned [-Ned Riseley, Newsletter Contributor]( [ [( food & drink [] [Tiny Bodega Is Making It Easier To Find POC-Owned Brands]( Tiny Bodega started as an Instagram and grew up to become a website that helps to highlight and amplify independent brands owned by people of color. Founder Taylor Cook, a Harlem resident, was motivated to start a platform that centers POC food cultures and POC-owned brands, in an effort to decolonize the food industry and help people see beyond the limits of the “ethnic aisle.” The website not only highlights individual brands, but also includes food guides and resources, and offers meal boxes, which bring together food items as well as curated recipes to help people expand their palettes. [] [Check it Out!]( [( *Sponsored Ads List [( drinks [] [Try a “Choose Your Own Adventure Wine Cooler” for Super Bowl Sunday]( Whether you’re a football enthusiast, or you still have to Google who’s playing this Sunday, one thing that unites us this weekend is booze. Unless you’re a teetotaler, you’re going to want to wash down some team spirit with a big glass of “Tequila Mule,” which is just one of the many delicious-sounding drinks on this list of recipes. Oh, and there’s even a toothsome mocktail with cilantro and turmeric (Go on with your bad self!). As someone who once spent the entirety of Super Bowl Sunday at an empty spa in midtown, I will most certainly be trying one (or maybe three) of these drinks on Sunday. [] [Hike!]( [( [( news [] [Do You Have What it Takes to Come Up with a New Coffee Creamer Flavor?]( I’ve never said it before and I’ll probably never say it again, so listen up: Chobani needs your help. They already have a sweet cream, a vanilla, a caramel, and a hazelnut coffee creamer, but they’re not satisfied. They’re asking their loyal customers to help them come up with a new creamer flavor, and if you apply and win, you could receive $75,000. If you get runner-up, you’ll get 15,000, and if you get third place, you’ll get 10,000. Now, far be it for me to say, but I feel like if Chobani likes your idea enough, they should just hire you. Maybe you don’t want to work for Chobani though. I don’t know your life. So far, my flavor ideas are: pistachio, caramel explosion with Twix, and cognac. After years of only having the 21st century New York attention span to read nonfiction at a breakneck speed of two pages every four weeks, I have learned to love the novel again in quarantine. Stripped of all other resources for stimulation, I am once again discovering the pleasure of being transported literally anywhere but my apartment and being inside anyone else’s head but my own. Right now I’m reading Balzac. For fun! Who do I think I am? But enough about me. Now, I’m thrilled to have this list of some of the exciting books that have already or are coming out this year, and I hope you are too.
