[Hero_Image] âLayer Zeroâ with George Gilder By Chris Campbell External Advertisement The 4th Military Revolution is Happening There have been 3 military revolutions in the past 100 years. The first was when the tank was invented in 1915. The second was the nuclear bomb in 1945. The third was the "smart bomb" in 1991. Amid the turmoil, there will be many losers. CAMPBELL George Gilder, as you may know, is many things. He’s been called “the best independent semiconductor researcher on the planet.” And “the most original thinker on the planet.” He’s been called the world’s best speechwriter. And “one of the most respected tech investors in the world.” He predicted the rise of microchips in the 1980s, smartphones in the 1990s, and, of course, the rise of the Cryptocosm, a phrase coined by George himself to describe the burgeoning new economy built upon blockchain-based technologies. He’s also a champion for Layer Zero, a concept central to his Cryptocosm. This concept of Layer Zero is the reason George (and many others), despite the rampant doom and gloom in the mainstream news, remains so optimistic about the future. Layer Zero To be sure, Layer Zero goes by many definitions in the cryptosphere. “Layer zero,” one blog says, “is the initial stage of blockchain that allows various networks to function.” “Layer zero,” says another, “mainly involves the integration between blockchain and traditional networks.” “Layer Zero,” says yet another, “is at the bottom of the economic stack: the people.” George has a different take; “Layer zero,” he says, “is time.” That’s because time is one of the most precious resources on the planet. If you don’t put time at layer zero, nothing else makes sense. Once you do, however, everything begins to “gel.” This was just one (of many) core concepts during his rousing speech at our Paradigm Shift Summit. (If you were lucky enough to see his presentation live, you know his enthusiasm and optimism is infectious.) Here’s a breakdown of his speech: Information > Incentives “Economics is not a science of scarcity,” said George as he took the stage, “it’s a science of abundance.” For years, George’s central message has been that, when talking about the economy, information is more important than incentives: Successful economies are driven less by the “sharp edge of incentives” and more by the “unimpeded flow of information.” “Information theory defines information as surprise,” he explained. Deterministic theories can never predict surprises. (If they could, socialism would have been a blazing success.) Surprises are a result of human creativity: “Humans are naturally creative,” he declared, “in the image of their Creator.” [IMG 1] What distinguishes humans from computers and other machines is our ability to surprise: “If machines surprise you,” says Gilder, “they’re probably breaking down.” Surprise, then, is the essence of creativity. Surprise is a revelatory, transcendent — one might even daresay spiritual — experience. This is where the rubber meets the road in Gilder’s view of the world. His undying faith in human ingenuity is part and parcel of why he’s remained so optimistic in his 60+-year career. It says that genius is a potential within all of us, but it’s difficult to predict and contain. It’s a surprise. If we imagine human-contrived surprises to be little sparks of genius… Profit, in an ideal economy, would be the measure of one’s ability to grow, capture, and contain those sparks. But it takes a stable carrier—a “dumb layer” of no surprises—to facilitate this process of growing, capturing and containing sparks. Gold once played that role because we recognized that money should be the stable carrier of human ingenuity — of surprise. But, Gilder says, money has been perverted: “Activist monetary policy shortens the time horizons of the economy and pushes all the profits to short-term financial arbitrage.” Meanwhile, “we have governments around the world adopting emergency socialism.” But their days are numbered. As the world becomes more and more complex, the status quo’s tools to handle this complexity look more and more archaic and foolish. Paradigm shifts happen when the status quo is overrun by the anomalous — yes, surprises. Enter the Cryptocosm… The Cryptocosm is one part of a new cosmological paradigm that embraces information, asymmetry (cryptography), and complexity… Backed by the three most precious resources on the planet: time, information, and human genius. From the ground up, the cryptocosm is creating a stable carrier — a digital backbone — for the next wave of global innovation to come. For example… He spoke of an exciting new carbon age, with novel forms of carbon like graphene at the forefront. He spoke of the nanocosm, which sounds like science fiction… but is rapidly becoming reality, Imagine a medical diagnostic lab on a microchip… Blinding fast quantum computers smaller than a human cell… Indestructible roof shingles… unscratchable kitchen counters… cannonball proof armor. The opportunities are endless. “Systems of the world can change overnight,” says Gilder. These days, it’s easy to hear this and get scared. Change is scary. And too much of it can be dangerous. But the same goes for stagnation. Gilder reminds us that change, not stagnation, is the historical norm. And, historically, human ingenuity, creativity, and our capacity to cultivate surprises has always risen to the challenge. This time will be no different. As the world embraces Layer Zero, in all of its forms… (Time, human genius, and new ways of transacting) “The future,” he said, “can be a surprise.” And that’s pretty exciting. Until tomorrow, [Chris Campbell] Chris Campbell
