CAMPBELL War is as American as apple pie. Only 17 years in America’s 246-year history were without war. US military spending is bigger than the next 9 highest spending countries combined. [IMG 1] So when America announces it’s going to “beef up” its defense spending, nobody bats an eye. But, this time, other countries are following suit. Ireland, traditionally a neutral country, is now considering boosting defense spending. Japan, seeing the Russian missiles pounding Ukraine, are now getting spooked, boosting their defense spending. Taiwan is boosting defense spending to record highs in order to counter China. Speaking of China, the country spends a good amount on defense… But right now, it’s spending more money controlling its people. China’s “public safety” spending reached $210 billion in 2020, surpassing national defense spending. That money goes toward COVID-19 “health code” apps. It goes toward building surveillance and social credit systems. It goes toward keeping people in line during “zero-COVID.” Authoritarianism is expensive. And, once you hit the point of diminishing returns, the cost of enforcement begins to skyrocket. That’s why China is seeing an explosion in spending. [IMG 2] The exact same can be said for defense spending. So don’t expect defense spending to slow down. According to our colleague Jim Rickards, global defense spending is just getting started. Ukraine is not the only hotspot in the world. Tensions are rising in Taiwan, Iran, and along Russia’s borders. The move to admit Finland and Sweden to NATO will provoke even more threats from Russia beyond the battlefield in Ukraine. “In all of these disputes,” he goes on, “the U.S. defense and security edge will be innovation rather than boots on the ground.” Meaning? Defense spending is about to fly through the roof. In fact, according to Jim’s new “I-3” system, it’s already started. If you haven’t heard of it… I-3 is specifically designed to detect the subtle signs of insider activity. (It’s also designed to signal for HUGE potential upside.) Recently, it alerted Jim to activity in a specific defense contractor. “This could mean insiders are betting on a new contract (or series of contracts) being awarded... It could relate to heightened tensions between China, Taiwan and the U.S.... Or it could be something the public is not yet aware of.” Usually, when Jim’s “tripwires” are flipped, what follows next is a massive move up. The defense contractor is just the tip of the iceberg. And it’s one of many recommendations to come in Jim’s I-3 portfolio. Jim lays it all out in a brand new interview. (Watch the first five minutes.)
