Absolutely everything the experts told us was true has turned out not to be true. - The Fed has not controlled inflation. - The stimulus checks did not make us rich. - The government did not control the virus. - The vaccines did not work by any normal standard of what it means for vaccines to work. - The war in Ukraine has not brought Russia to its knees. - The Treasury did not save the stock market. - Zoom was no substitute for real education. - Biden did not bring the adults back to the room. - The economic planners in Washington did not stop the recession. Down Down Down Let’s talk about the last point. In a few weeks, it will likely become official. We are in a recession. You probably already knew that. But these days, we have to wait for statisticians to confirm the existence of reality. The Atlanta Fed has downgraded its previous forecast and now says that the economy contracted in the second quarter by one percent. That’s grim. If you doubt the official figures, and you should, you might have the sense that we never left the forced recession of 2020 designed to get Trump out of office. All the rest was nothing but a flurry of paper. Meanwhile, Biden is epically unpopular, so much so that even CNN is talking about it. We are at a 20-point split between approve and disapprove. Only one-third of the public continues to tell pollsters he is doing a fine job. Every American knows that you can get a third of the public to believe anything. What we are witnessing is the massive and shocking decline and fall of expertise. They asked us to trust them. Many people did. Now, look at the gigantic mess they made. And we aren’t talking about abstractions here. Their screw-ups became extremely personal, all the way to forcing an unknown DNA-altering substance into our bloodstream at the penalty of losing our jobs. The Prison Revolt People can be compliant. They can be sweet. They can be trusting and very naive. But there comes a point — usually when the pillaging becomes impossible to ignore — where people say that they won’t take it anymore. Even in prisons, there can be riots. We are getting to that point in American life today. It’s so intense that even the Supreme Court is acting on it. A concurring opinion to West Virginia v. EPA, written by Judge Neil Gorsuch, took to teaching basic lessons on civics, quoting even the Federalist Papers. He reminded his fellow justices and the rest of the country that we are supposed to have a government controlled by the people, not faceless bureaucrats accountable to no one. No, the bureaucracies cannot just make stuff up and impose it with massive penalties. The EPA has been acting illegally all along. They must cease and desist in this preposterous effort of attempt to use command and control to adjust the global climate. It is not only unscientific; it is contrary to every ideal. To be sure, Gorsuch said, some people think that the people of this country are too stupid to manage their own lives. He cited Woodrow Wilson, the founding father of Progressivism, who happens to be the most openly racist president in American history. He actually pointed this out in a Supreme Court opinion! The other thing is that the Supreme Court is WAY behind public opinion. Trust is already gone. It won’t likely return for the rest of our lives. As the economy tanks further while inflation roars like never before, people are only going to get angrier than ever. I'm telling you, the Republicans who take over in November are going to have a time of it. They had better prepare for FULL-SCALE opposition mode, passing bill after bill to switch off the administrative state, kill bureaucracies, punish wrongdoers, slash taxes, and otherwise do their best to emancipate this country from the ruling class. None of it will get the president’s signature but at least they will get credit for trying. Otherwise, they too will go down with the ship. The thing one notices about Americans, in particular, is that we believe that we have inherited a birthright. We have. It is to live in freedom, to possess rights, to own the idea of progress, and to have hope in the future. Every song and every tale of our civic celebrates this. It will not be taken away by a bunch of smarty pants 30-something grads from Ivy League colleges who are begging to have their loans forgiven. The managerial class of the ruling regime is woefully out of touch. They are living off their ideology but public opinion is reducing that gassy stench to nothingness. They can deconstruct all they want but there is nothing they can do to change the realities all around us. And the reality suggests nothing but failure. Bizarro World The present misery concerns, among other things, the bizarre happenings in an inflationary recession. Car sales are plummeting, strongly suggesting a deep downturn, but meanwhile, the prices of cars are through the roof. That’s a hard trick to do unless you have utterly incompetent managers at the top who are devaluing the dollar at the same time they are wrecking sector after sector. What’s the most important thing to do right now? I would suggest the following implausibility: read.
