And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.
- Samuel Taylor Coleridge Glenn sends his son, Evan, to bed. Five minutes later, Evan screams downstairs, “Dad! Can you get me a glass of water?” Glenn says, “No. You had your chance.” After a minute, Evan screams again, “Dad! Can you get me a glass of water?” Glenn says, “No. I told you, you had your chance. If you ask one more time, I’ll come up there and give you a spanking. After a short silence, the father hears, “Dad! When you come up to give me a spanking, can you bring me a glass or water?” Today, we’re going to talk about something a bit different: water… We’re also going to talk about the impending water wars. (Coming to a suburb near you.) AND… We’ll also talk about ideas for investing in solutions. Before we go there, however, a quick housekeeping note, in case you missed it: James has a special message he wants you to see. He recorded a video just for you from his home office. Aqua… H2O… dihydrogen monoxide… Adam’s ale… A little over 70% of our Earth’s surface is made up of it. And, apparently, up to 60% of your body is it. It’s the essential ingredient for life on the planet. Lately, due to massive droughts in the West, the stuff has been leaking into the minds of those who would otherwise take it for granted. And the cracks are beginning to show. We knew it before. But now we’re really beginning to comprehend it: There’s so much water on this planet... but only a very tiny percentage of it is actually useful to us. And that’s a problem. It’s the irony of California’s current situation. Leaving out Hawaii and, arguably, Florida, Californians have more access to water than any other state’s citizens. But 99% of it is essentially useless. OK. So we know how much water we can’t drink. Let’s zoom in on the water that we can drink… Years ago, my refusal to drink tap water was met with scorn and guffaws. Today, most people get it. Here are some little-known facts about U.S. tap water released by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): “For three straight years (1999-2001), the covers of Washington D.C.’s right-to-know reports blared “Your Drinking Water is Safe!” but the city’s water had significant levels of chlorination by-products, lead, bacteria and an unexplained spike in cyanide. “When Newark, New Jersey’s water failed to meet the EPA’s action level for lead,” the organization goes on, “its right-to-know report buried a health warning and detailed information on the situation deep in the report. “Phoenix’s right-to-know report failed to mention violations of drinking water rules that the city had reported to the U.S. EPA; it also deeply buried crucial, required information about the health effects of arsenic and nitrates in the city’s tap water in a small print footnote. “Lead, which can cause brain damage and decreased intelligence in children, gets into drinking water from corroding pipes and faucets; Boston, Newark and Seattle exceeded the national action level for lead.” In sum, NRDC says, one unassuming glass of tap water in America could contain: [IMG 1] Sure, it’s easy to discount these findings. Compliance testing happens each year, some argue. And periodic tests are made… periodically. But here’s the thing… It’s not what they test for that scares me. It’s what they don’t test for that makes my giblets quiver. And for good reason… Pharmaceuticals. According to one WebMd article by journalist Kathleen Doheny (reviewed by physician, Louise Chang, MD): “Tiny amounts of pharmaceuticals — including [antibiotics]( hormones, mood stabilizers, and other drugs — are in our drinking water supplies, according to a media report.” Uppers. Downers. All-Arounders. Hypnotics. Sedatives. Benzos. Speeders. They were all present at the pool party. Worse, there’s a complete scandal surrounding this discovery. Here’s what one section of the AP report — “Pharmwater-Secrecy” — says: “When water providers find pharmaceuticals in drinking water, they rarely tell the public. When researchers make the same discoveries, they usually don’t identify the cities involved. “There are plenty of reasons offered for the secrecy: concerns about national security, fears of panic, a feeling that the public will not understand — even confidentiality agreements.” If that worries you… There’s an even bigger problem lurking… WATER WARS. And they’re coming to a suburb near you. More on that tomorrow. Until then, [Chris Campbell] Chris Campbell
