The Failed State [Jeffrey Tucker]Dear Daily Prophecy Reader, The inflation news this morning was a shock when it should not have been. Everyone knows inflation is awful but there is just something special when the official numbers seem to confirm one’s worst fears. Why? Because we can all assume that the reality is far worse. The day before the CPI release, a hilariously fake CPI report made the rounds on Wall Street. It claimed that inflation was running at 10.2%. The Department of Labor immediately pointed out that this was a ridiculous hoax. Everyone had a good sleep last night. This morning, the ugly truth hit: the fake was not wrong by too much. The official rate came in at 9.1%. There will be no blaming Putin for this one! We can expect Biden’s popularity to fall below 30%, even to 20% and 10%. This is truly as terrible a political meltdown as we’ve seen in our lifetimes. And let us look at the two-year stack on inflation, since there is no particular reason why we should forever only count changes year=over-year. My friend Doug Rudisch likes to calculate this and here is what he came up with: 14.5%. This is nothing short of disastrous. American purchasing power is being drained away as we speak, and our incomes and economic prospects along with it. It is a kind of revolution. [chart] Donald Trump — a Silicon Valley HERO? [Full story here.]( The Fed Just how serious is the Fed at this inflation fight? Yes, it is pushing up rates and yes this is putting pressure on all financials, which seem to be headed back to 2019, wiping out all the false prosperity of 2021 and getting us back to reality. High-end companies are laying off workers, and there is no plan at all to inspire economic growth in a way that might eat up some of this liquidity in the markets. Indeed, Biden apparently believes that poverty is the only way to fight inflation, therefore we are getting both. Here is how the Fed is fighting inflation. Looking at it this way, it is a joke! [Note, the red should say “Federal Funds Effective Rate”] [chart] You can see, then, just how pathetic this war on inflation really is. But even then, it is having devastating effects on the market. The Fed is essentially two years behind and so far its war is entirely cosmetic. It will have ZERO impact on the price increases. The money washing up all over the world will certainly have to become endemic. We are looking at two more years of pain, no matter what a new Congress does. By that time, the Democratic Party in the U.S. will face a serious threat, not only in terms of the presidency but in terms of its own actual existence. It will have been killed by its economic ignorance, its woke philosophy, and its pathological obsession with Trump hatred. It is dragging the U.S. out of the age of its own empire into something else. The Failed State U.S. elites, in their arrogance some years ago, began to classify states as either successful or failed. Any state classified as failed was regarded as disreputable, worthy of being permanently tossed out of the community of nations, and probably vulnerable to overthrow. I got curious about what defines a failed state. Here is what Wikipedia offers. A failed state is a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly. A state can also fail if the government loses its legitimacy even if it is performing its functions properly. For a stable state, it is necessary for the government to enjoy both effectiveness and legitimacy. Likewise, when a nation weakens and it's standard of living declines, it introduces the possibility of total governmental collapse. The Fund for Peace characterizes a failed state as having the following characteristics: - Loss of control of its territory, or of the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force - Erosion of legitimate authority to make collective decisions - Inability to provide public services - Inability to interact with other states as a full member of the international community Common characteristics of a failing state include a central government so weak or ineffective that it has an inability to raise taxes or other support and has little practical control over much of its territory and hence there is a non-provision of public services. When this happens, widespread corruption and criminality, the intervention of state and non-state actors, the appearance of refugees and the involuntary movement of populations, sharp economic decline, and military intervention from both within and without the state in question can occur. If that doesn’t give you chills, nothing will. The emergency is very real. Meanwhile, the GOP is nowhere near woken up to the fury among its base. The elites at the top are still asleep, figuring out strategies for how to use this disaster to pack Congress. It should instead be trying to figure out how to save the country from complete disaster. What about this point concerning military intervention within and without? The U.S. military is purging its ranks of unvaccinated soldiers, 60,000 among the National Guard alone. Lots of regimes in the world would be VERY interested in seeing the U.S. brought to its knees for what it has done to the world, not only since 2001 but since the lockdowns of 2020, which destroyed life on earth for billions of people. We are on the cusp of seeing what this looks like in terms of blowback. Only a few months ago, I wrote here about the prospects of civil war. It sounded crazy at the time but I wrote it anyway. Today, it seems less crazy but no less terrifying. This is no longer about petty issues of political control. This is about saving a way of life and even civilization itself.
