There are so many data points and new developments that are profoundly affecting our lives. And it is changing by the day, even by the hour. The upheaval of our time is nothing any of us prepared for. It’s not even possible to fully prepare. We just watch in astonishment. It was only a few months ago I warned that this year would present us with a wild ride. It’s far crazier than I imagined. I’m going to structure the rest of this message without a structure, but rather with observations big and small. My Friend the Brewer A friend of mine in Brooklyn made some money in tech and then decided to pursue his dream of owning a brewery. He studied the craft. He leveraged up to buy all the expensive equipment. He got the building, built the brand, and pushed the marketing. This is American dream stuff, of course. And it worked. His brewery was an amazing success. Then, the government shut it down, as governments all over the country did. These were very hard times. How can they do this? Doesn't matter: they did it. In the name of pandemic control. He struggled to keep employees and keep paying the mortgage and other debt. This went on for nearly a year. Finally, he was able to open again under restrictions. Then, the vaccine mandates came and half his customer base was not allowed in. He was put in the position of enforcing a law with which he profoundly disagreed. The government had outsourced itself to the brewery. That’s a form of nationalization! It’s certainly not respecting private property. After months of this, he couldn’t stand it anymore. He went to Twitter to complain. He pointed out that he is named after a Holocaust survivor. He studied that ghastly episode his entire life. He knew that it began not with how it ended, but by segregating people based on biology and political loyalty. Something like that was happening in New York, he wrote, and that as a Jew he could not sit back in silence. Twitter blew up. His post was reported. The New York Times assigned a reporter to the task. They interviewed him. They wrote a big article that left out most of the interview. The story in the Times generated a woke mob to come after him. Some of his own employees, ever alert to holding the right opinions at the right time, turned on him. After several sleepless weeks and massive life upheaval, he made the decision to resign from the brewery he founded. He is now packing his bags and moving to Florida in hopes of finding some peace. It’s just one story, but there are thousands and even millions of other stories along these lines. The purge takes many forms, some more noisy and some very quiet. It’s always humiliating. Bottom line: some people are out for blood. They won’t be satisfied until they get it. Biden to Replace US Dollar? Thanks to President Biden’s Executive Order 14067, a former advisor to the CIA and Pentagon predicts the 3rd Great Dollar Quake has begun. The first was Roosevelt confiscating private gold in 1934. The Censors Along similar lines: remember how in November I predicted that the change in the terms of use of mainstream venues would cause a mass purge? The date set for implementation was January 6. The purge did not start. Two months later, it has begun with astonishing ferocity. My friend Michael Senger wrote the definitive book on China’s influence over US pandemic policy. He is an attorney and very smart. Not a crazy person. Just a good American scholar with a desire to shed light on our strange times. He developed a huge Twitter following. He enjoyed the opportunity to offer a different point of view. Last night, I messaged him on Twitter. He didn’t answer. That’s fine. Not everyone needs to be on messaging all the time. But just in case, I wrote to him again. Nothing. I clicked on his profile. To my shock, he had been completely suspended. All his history of tweets: disappeared. His followers: gone. His existence on the platform had been totally erased. No warnings. No explanation other than to say something about medical misinformation. What had he posted? It was a conventional post about the failings of US policy. Nothing crazy. It was enough to have his account deployed as an example to others. If you fail to echo the line of the day, the big tech platforms will throw a bag over your head and drag you out. Done. It turns out that this week has been devastating for dissidents. Thousands are being purged. I’m probably next on the list, but there is no way to know. That’s the thing about authoritarianism. It is never consistently applied. Being arbitrary is part of the point. You are being groomed to live in a permanent state of fear. There is no way to fully comply. The point is to be so consumed with paranoia that at any time your voice will be silenced for any reason at all. Big tech gets away with this stuff because it is “private.” Right. What’s happened is that government knows that its own censorship would not survive a court challenge, so it has effectively nationalized the biggest companies to make them bear the brunt. They step up sometimes willingly and sometimes just because they are forced to. Yes, there are other options out there, none with the reach or network of the older companies. The Surgeon General I still cannot believe what the U.S. Surgeon General said a few days ago. He demanded that big tech turn over the names of the people who he believes are spreading “misinformation.” Not only that. He provided a link to a new snitch line set up by the federal government so that anyone can go there and report others. It’s the digital equivalent of the Red Guard, using neighbors and friends in a proxy war against citizens. We’ve never seen anything like this. Some friends of mine have used the snitch line to report Fauci and company. Very clever. But very dangerous too. Russia and Gasoline The propaganda is pouring out now at an astonishing rate, much of it designed to find some scapegoat for the inflationary calamity all around us. This transitory inflation has become hyperinflation that is not only not calming down but getting worse by the day. It has a Weimar feel to it in some sectors. I’ve seen $5.50 per gallon diesel and California is seeing $7 per gallon in some areas. Who knows what it will be like next week. Incredibly, the Biden administration is telling people that this is all the fault of Russia, while meanwhile blocking all Russian energy imports which forcibly restricts supply while seeking new sources of oil and gas in Venezuela. It’s all just insane. Also, this is designed to deflect attention from the Fed and the US government generally, same as in the 1970s when everyone was told that the fault lies not with price controls but with OPEC. Same trick, different times. They say inflation is 7.5%. It’s a complete joke. Meanwhile, Americans are getting used to empty shelves in grocery stores, and astonishing prices of once-reliable staples. Now Is the Time I’m out of space, but permit me to be a bit dramatic, if not emotional right now. We are living amidst the great unraveling of basic freedoms. We never thought it was possible but it is here right now. I’ve never been more grateful for the opportunity just to be able to reach you and other subscribers on this list. This list is set up to be as independent and protected as possible. That doesn’t make it invulnerable, but it is secure for now. The once-open Internet is closing quickly.
