Biden said “food shortages…it’s going to be real.” “The price of the sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia. It’s imposed upon an awful lot of countries as well, including European countries and our country as well.” So far, everyone seems calm about this. This is the US President warning of food shortages in Europe and the US. You know, the stuff we eat. The way we stay alive. Food shortages prompt revolutions and civil war, and cause people to lose their morality. There has been talk for decades about hunger in America. It’s mostly bunk. Survey takers go around and ask people, have you ever experienced real hunger? People think, “hey, yeah, I could eat.” So they check the box and the headlines go nuts. Pretty silly. No Food, No Morality But what is real hunger? What does it really mean to have a shortage of food? Most Americans have no clue. No idea. We’ve not really been there, not even during the Great Depression. Please forgive me the following ridiculous story. It’s my only lifetime point of reference for the fundamental biological and moral changes that happen in the case of real genuine hunger. The story is pathetic or funny, I don’t know which. I was traveling to several countries, over several days, and hopping from one airport to another, grabbing sleep where I could. I somehow lost track of the need to eat. I wasn’t even sure what day it was. I can’t even remember which airport I was in or whether it was night or day. I only remember being flat on my back on the floor trying to sleep, which I did for several hours. When I woke up, the airport was full of people. I was deeply confused. I sat up and then realized something: I was starving. Not just hungry but existentially threatened. It had been two days at least or maybe more since I had eaten. Panic swept through my mind. It was like the cartoon where the two people on the boat are starving and each begins to imagine the other as a cooked chicken. Everything around me looked delicious. I just had to eat. I looked around and saw a food court that was now open. There was a pizza buffet. I stood in line. It took all my energy just to order, but, order I did: pepperoni. The guy behind me ordered cheese.I made my way to the cashier, who handed me a pizza. It was cheese. I knew it was not mine. But somehow, for reasons that deeply embarrass me now, I took it anyway. It was as if I could not wait another 90 seconds for my order so I knowingly took another person’s order. I’ve never done anything like that before or since, but also I had never felt hunger like that. I sat there devouring it, feeling physically satisfied but morally tortured for the decision I made. It was like I had lost my mind. Hunger, real hunger, does that to you. To everyone. I’m trying to figure out why Biden’s alarming announcement was considered political news rather than an invitation to freak out. One possibility is that no one takes him seriously. After more than a year of gaffes and goofs, mangled sentences and strange utterances, people cannot be sure if what he is saying is genuine or just some recall from within his increasingly mushy brain mass. There is now a tendency to discount whatever he says that is not on the teleprompter. Another explanation: Americans are numb to everything. We’ve been through two brutal years of shock and awe. We’ve seen awful things. We are emotionally drained and disconnected. We don’t know what’s real and what’s not. We expect the worst but lack the feeling of volition that is capable of changing things. We are like characters in a dystopian movie. We saunter from place to place, listen to but ignore announcements, comply because we have to, adhere to the routine. A third possibility I hinted at above. People do not know what it means to not have food available. Most families long ago stopped storing food in jars or putting away large amounts of meat and vegetables in a large freezer in the garage. Why do that when you can just swing by the store anytime? Even better these days, food is available with a click on a smartwatch. Order the burrito and the burrito appears. So the idea of an actual shortage of food seems utterly inconceivable. The Unthinkable You know what’s also unthinkable? Stay-at-home orders. Mass and mandatory business closures. Churches shuttered on Easter. Medical passports to enter museums and restaurants. Tenured professors fired for not getting the shot. Students locked in dorm rooms, forced to watch their boring professors on screens. In the economic realm: Congress voting $6 trillion in stimulus that is matched dollar-for-dollar with money printing by the Fed, thus generating huge inflation. And it’s accelerating to the point that our food prices have risen not just 9%, but far more, perhaps closer to 20-50% in fewer than six weeks. This is matched by empty shelves. All of this is real and yet we imagine that food shortages would be inconceivable. Numb. That’s a good description of so many people now. What’s Causing This? It’s not a mystery why Biden said what he said. He is trying to deflect blame, from US government policies over to the war in the Ukraine. The US is on the right side, he says, and that means sacrificing for “freedom” — freedom not for Americans but for Ukrainians. So when your package of bacon is $15 and then $20 and then when it is not there at all, you can feel good about it. Talk about being gaslighted. We know it’s happening. They know they are doing it. They know that we know. And yet, it all continues day after day. I have another worry. If Biden is willing to say such a thing, how do we know if and whether he is actually downplaying the larger worry? Maybe that sounds paranoid, but we should know by now that anything is possible.
