If the answer is no, congratulations. It means that you have unplugged from mainstream news. Your phone notifications are not controlled by CNN and MSNBC. You are not turning on the nighty news from corporate media and your inbox is not flooded by fake information that dominates all mainstream coverage. It means that you have mentally seceded. That’s the key to a happy life. If you have been thinking about Joe Rogan, it’s probably because you have been told he is an enemy of society, which is to say an enemy of the state. He has enabled misinformation. He has bad guests on his show. These guests say things that people like Fauci and Psaki do not like. Indeed, Psaki herself threatened Spotify, the hosting platform to which Rogan is committed (more on that in a bit). She said that unless Rogan cleans up his act, the powers of the state will be unleashed to curb or even shut it down. Hey, doesn’t this threat seem to violate the first amendment, which seems to forbid the US government from restricting freedom of speech? Surely it does — if the Bill of Rights meant anything anymore. Truth is that the current regime doesn’t care about these ancient pieces of parchment. They are merely an annoyance. What they really care about is controlling the information you get. They are determined to craft a world in which the only truths you hear are those they determine to be truth. So you can forget about all the claims made against Rogan. His crime is not that he uttered a racial epithet some years ago. His crime is that he has given voice to serious scientists and journalists who reject the regime priorities of the last two years. More than that, his audience has grown so big that he reaches more people than watch corporate media. And that is absolutely amazing. Did we ever really believe that the new world of universal unapproved information would be born and then become dominant without some fight? Maybe I believed that. I was naive. I did not know just how crucial propaganda really was to the state and the deep state. Now that the panic and the witch hunts are on, I’m more aware than ever — and ever more grateful for independent venues. The War Is On While millions of people were forced to take sides in the great Rogan controversies of our time, something else was happening north of the US border. In Canada, of all places, in the capital city of Ottawa, a working-class convoy of truckers seems to have largely taken control of the whole city. True story. Astonishing. You might think that this would be the front page of the New York Times. In truth, the paper hasn’t reported on this at all. The media these days has a full-time job to manufacture a fake version of reality for us to consume. It feels dystopian because it is. We are supposed to sit around hating on Rogan, even as a revolt is brewing like none of us have ever experienced. You can see it taking shape in all places and sectors. The theme is: the people vs. the elites. It is intensifying by the day. In Ottawa, there are some police left there even as the ruling regime has largely fled the city. Neither the prime minister nor his cabinet nor most government officials are to be found anywhere. There is growing talk of the truckers as promoting insurrection. The police have been attempting to confiscate the goods of anyone who brings in fuel and food to keep the seeming occupation going as long as possible, which is to say that the government is trying to starve and freeze the opposition. We’ve come a very long way from “two weeks to flatten the curve!” Now it has become a war on dissent. It’s hard to predict where this ends up. The government could have and should have met with the truckers and met their demands at least halfway. Instead, there have been no meetings, just public denunciations of them with the usual ridiculous claims against them. I have plenty of friends who have been there the whole time and their reports are nothing like what the government claims. [Click here to learn more]( How Propaganda Works When I was in school, learning about the history of censorship and propaganda in totalitarian regimes, I assumed that most people in these countries believed the lies simply because it was the only information available. The purpose of “free radio” programs was to inject the truth, which people found shocking uponhearing. The reality we are experiencing now is not that. When Trudeau went on air to denounce the protestors, he said only things that every single person listening knew was completely false. We in the US experience this daily if we pay attention to presidential press briefings. They stand up there to say things everyone knows are completely false: masks work, inflation is temporary, the vaccine is the key to ending the pandemic, the real threat is Trump, and so on. We all know that this is baloney. I’ve come to realize something. The purpose of propaganda is not to convince people of lies they do not believe and will not believe. The purpose is to illustrate and exhibit the use of power. It’s not power merely to say what’s true. Power consists of the ability to tell lies that everyone knows are false and still expect compliance. That’s what it feels like to be powerful: to assert fictions with a straight face and demand that everyone go along. Psaki provided a wonderful example of this late last week. A reporter confronted her with the newest study showing that lockdowns did not mitigate the pandemic. Without hesitation, she proceeded to explain that the Biden administration has always been against lockdowns; indeed, lockdowns were the policy of the last administration. They on the other hand are in favor of opening everything safely. Upon hearing those words, my jaw hit the floor. Every single American living today knows that the states controlled by Democrats are the same ones with mask mandates, social distancing rules, vaccine mandates, and on-again-off-again school closures. It’s the Republican states where life long ago went back to more-or-less normal. And this is because lockdowns and mandates have since the summer of 2020 been the preferred policy of Biden’s party. Yet she stands up there and says complete nonsense and expects everyone to go along. Rogan’s Mistake This last week gave us two excellent examples of the danger of third-party platforms and why decentralized, peer-to-peer applications are the way of the future. Rogan signed a contract with Spotify that gives the company exclusive rights to his podcasts. They can post them or not, enable them or delete them, censor them or make them open. It’s entirely up to Spotify and Rogan can say nothing about it. That’s extremely dangerous in times when the state is putting pressure on basically everyone to conform to regime priorities. Another example is the platform GoFundMe. The truckers in Canada used the platform to raise some $10 million. GoFundMe first refused to release the money on grounds that the recipient had not submitted a coherent plan for how they will use the money. A few days later, they said they would not give the money to the intended recipient. Then they said they would take the money (yes, steal it) and give it to charities of their choosing. Only after massive online protests did GoFundMe relent and agree to refund all donations, even Elon Musk’s. Then it removed the fundraiser. Yes, that will seriously harm the reputation of this platform. And it also makes the point — as many Bitcoiners were quick to point out — about the dangers of intermediaries in the financial space. Any of them can delete you and rob you at any point. They are all facing growing regulatory pressure to make sure that every institution that uses them complies. That goes for email sending apps, financial applications, web-service plugins, photo editing services, video and podcast hosting, and everything else. If you are paying for a third party to do work for you, that third party can cancel you instantly and thereby ruin your life.
