It was something about how the handshake is going extinct. It’s just too risky in a world filled with dangerous pathogens and every living person is a disease vector as in some sci-fi novel. Imagining the world this way, trying to fit into it, has no doubt given her aimless life some meaning and direction. The flight was aimed away from the free state of Texas and into the locked-down region of the US, so perhaps the paper is just preparing people for life on Covid Mars. But I can tell you this as a report from the great state that Biden likes to hate: the handshake is going nowhere. They are more firm and lengthy than ever. Indeed, the deep history of the handshake is all about trust and confidence, an openness to human contact, and not its avoidance. From what I can tell, there is a massive cultural hunger for its full restoration, at least insane parts of the country. All the Fake News Fit to Print So what is it with these reporters? How is it that they can be so successful at generating an endless stream of panic porn about this pathogen with a 99.9% survival rate and an average age of death of 80 with 2 or more comorbidities? I ask myself that question every day, and my only remaining answer is that it speaks to the astonishing capacity of even the most educated and rational society suddenly to lose its collective mind in group panic, over just about anything real or imagined. The media has been a handmaiden in this whole fiasco, with the New York Times leading the way for a full year and a half. In better times, this paper saw itself as the calming voice of science, calm, and objectivity as a counter to populist hysterias. That was precisely what the paper did in previous pandemics: 2012, 2009, 2006, 1987, 1968, 1956, 1942, 1929, and so on. This was the way public health positioned itself in the past: keep society functioning and let medical practitioners do their job. [No more banks. No more accountants. No more Wall Street?]( The Masquerade of Fake Science Now the paper will publish anything provided it generates hysteria and makes the case for ever-more intense impositions on people’s liberties. Even when doing so comes at the expense of the physical and psychological well being of children. It’s all too much to believe but let me cite exhibit A in fake news science.The whole thing was structured to demand more masks on kids but also the entire thing is bogus. The article is by Dr. Kanecia Zimmearman and Dr. Danny Benjamin Jr., both of Duke University, who wrote a piece based on their big study of children and disease transmission. It is titled: “[We Studied One Million Students. This Is What We Learned About Masking]( Yeah, sure. They study one million students and in fact found absolutely nothing of any meaning, as a close read of the study shows. “In July 2020, we and our colleagues developed the ABC Science Collaborative to pair scientists with school and community leaders to make sure that school leaders had the most up-to-date, scientific information pertaining to Covid-19 and K-12 schools,” they write in demonstration of how fancy they are. “In conjunction with North Carolina, the ABC Science Collaborative collected data from more than one million students and staff members in the state’s schools from March to June 2021.” What did these geniuses find? They found a low transmission rate of the virus. “We believe this low rate of transmission occurred because of the mask-on-mask school environment: Both the infected person and the close contact wore masks. Schools provided this protection without expensive screening tests for the coronavirus or massive overhauls in ventilation systems.” It’s science! But wait just a minute. You need a control group if you are going to posit some plausible causal agent. Otherwise you end up picking some random one factor out of 10,000 and crediting it for something or another. All the kids wore masks but they all wore shoes and underwear too. How can they know for sure that masking made the difference? In this one sentence, they give away the whole game, just in passing: “Because North Carolina had a mask mandate for all K-12 schools, we could not compare masked schools to unmasked schools.” External Advertisement Detonating in 3… 2.. 1… Declining smartphone sales is troubling for Apple.… It’s like running an engine on a single battery connection. But Apple’s fate could change on September 8. On September 8, I believe Apple will announce a brand-new device — the “iPhone Killer,” thus connecting its positive terminal (red). Thus there is no way to infer causality of any kind from this study. Sensing this rather enormous problem, the authors could have looked at Florida, Sweden, South Dakota, or another hundred or so school districts, but instead the cherry picked an incident in Israel in which the air conditioners broke and the kids removed their masks. They could have look at thousands of other cases throughout Europe where they aren’t stupid enough to strap cloth on kids’ faces, but nope. The author David Zweig, a genuinely honest reporter, wrote the authors of this piece with some salient questions. The authors answered a few emails but then ended the correspondence completely. The authors made their point, readers felt good about themselves, the kids got masked up, and the disease panic can continue for another day. Onward to talk about the Delta variant! Wait, make that the Lambda variant! And boosters! [Will this weird device be in your home soon?]( Meanwhile in Sweden Sweden’s choices in the last year and a half were hugely important to the Western world. It was one of the few countries in the world that did not buckle under the pressure of the WHO. Instead, they chose rationality and science. They preferred recommendations not mandates. Masks were rare. Schools never closed. No businesses were shut down. People were cautious but society stayed open. The Swedish model was pilloried by the international press, viciously. Drs. Fauci and Birx even convinced Trump that Sweden had chosen a disastrous path, and this was crucial to his decision to lock down the US. But here we are a year and a half later and Sweden has zero daily deaths from Covid. Like everywhere else in the world, there were waves of infections and fatalities and then the virus became endemic. That’s the whole story. Sweden's choices, however, kept society functioning and now the whole country is moving on with 100% normalcy. Here is what the graph looks like. [Chart] Must be nice, eh? Remember when the American Left celebrated Sweden as the model welfare state? Well, the US is now much larger and vast parts of the country are still suffering under various types of lockdown tyranny. Two weeks ago, New York was almost maskless. Now it is all masked up again, all because of the CDC and media propaganda. Sweden meanwhile is in fabulous shape, having protected the rights and freedoms of its people. The pressure was intense on Sweden for most of 2020. It got so bad that the King of Sweden (yes, they have one) himself decried the policy. But look now and what you see is total vindication. In any case, post about this and you risk getting censored. The fake news is bad enough; the censorship is worse because it means that you can’t even counter false information or discover insight from those who do. The combination means that the walls are closing in fast. The age of information is turning into the age of censorship. What can we learn? Stick to principle. Stick to facts. Stick to rationality. Don’t join the mobs. Say what is true and act on it. Give it time. The people who manage to do that in the midst of hysteria are the winners in the long run.
