Consumers must be aware... [Gilder's Daily Prophecy] June 15, 2021 [UNSUBSCRIBE]( | [ARCHIVES]( George Gilder: “Do NOT buy bitcoin until you’ve seen this.” [person stops money]( believes something bigger – and potentially more lucrative – than bitcoin is emerging as we speak. It could ultimately generate trillions of dollars. And George recently went on camera to discuss his top stocks to buy to tap into that trillion-dollar potential. [Check the footage out HERE while you can.]( [Warning] Do you enjoy receiving Gilder's Daily Prophecy? Please [Click Here Now]( so we know to continue sending you Gilder's Daily Prophecy for free! One Privacy Change You Need Now [Jeffrey Tucker]Dear Daily Prophecy Reader, We [previously]( discussed how our friendly consumer technologies gradually took on a menacing ethos. It’s taken me years to come to terms with the new reality. It was like an intellectual breakup for me. Since then, I’ve been curious about ways to fix the problem, at least at the margin. What follows are some easy steps that everyone should take, and I do not just mean turning off COVID tracking from your phone. But of course you should do that immediately: settings -> privacy -> tracking -> off. Instead, let’s talk about web browsers, both desktop and mobile. No one would have believed it during the first browser wars (1995-2001) but Google now makes the most popular browser. Microsoft Explorer, which once ruled the world, is dead. The browser in question is Chrome. You probably use it. When it first came out, it was a blessing. Fast. Lightweight. Easy to install. All that was years ago. Once again we observe another case of a company that earned our loyalty through winning our trust turning in another direction. Chrome’s latest release has doubled down on its tracking technology extracting personal data on its 2.65 billion users. To harvest all this data for ads and other kinds of spying is too great a temptation, even given the huge user revolt against big tech for violating privacy rights. The new release of Chrome has perfected the art of taking your digital fingerprint, even if you think you are not allowing that. Security expert Zak Doffman [writes]( Clearly, if you use a browser provided by an advertising company (Google), then what happens next is unsurprising. More broadly, unless you adjust your privacy settings and select apps and platforms that put privacy first, you can assume that you are being followed (digitally) everywhere you go, that everything you do is being watched... That’s why when you Google something in one room, your partner sees an ad for that same product in their Facebook feed shortly afterward in another room. It’s a great way to manipulate you, to turn you into a buyer. You share an IP address. You’re matched on a social graph. Clearly, you're fair game. Going the Wrong Direction What’s striking here is how Google seems to be going the opposite direction of other companies like Apple, which are sincerely working toward protecting privacy. Of all the companies in the big tech space, Apple is the best at this. You have less to worry about from your iPhone and Macbook than from other competitive hardware out there. I’m sure Apple is far from perfect on privacy issues, but the company has been tested in its willingness to cooperate with governments on a number of occasions. It has routinely refused except for the most obvious cases. The company even took the extra step of building its own servers and following them from construction to installation to make sure that there was no possibility of installing a backdoor in them. This was true under Steve Jobs and remains true under the leadership of Tim Cook. Even then, you can find yourself in a swirl of Google products that find other ways. Keep in mind, too, that Google (a company I loved and celebrated when it was committed not to doing evil), owns YouTube. YouTube has been on a year-long war on science, deleting anything that contradicts the CDC. Even more weird, YouTube deletes any video that cites CDC numbers if or when they contradict the company line on COVID vaccines or masks. It’s been brutal, and continues. Just last week, YouTube deleted a segment from Tucker Carlson’s show featuring a Harvard immunologist’s warnings about side effects of vaccines. Zap, it was gone. We used to believe that YouTube’s actions only targeted bad people and hateful ideas. Back then, we thought it would never reach respectable scientists. Last year we realized otherwise. If it were not for venues like [Rumble]( and [Odysee]( many thousands of hours of lectures and interviews with top scientists would have been obliterated. A company that would do this has absolutely no moral scruples about protecting the privacy of the fingerprints that it collects on you. It gets worse. Look at what happened in China. Big tech companies copied the American model. One day, government showed up. The WSJ [explains]( more: Shortly after rising to power in late 2012, Xi Jinping made his first company visit in his new job as China’s Communist Party chief, to Tencent Holdings Ltd. There, he raised a topic that has become both an opportunity and a challenge for his rule: the vast troves of personal data being gathered by the country’s technology companies. Mr. Xi complimented Tencent’s founder, Pony Ma, on the way the company was accumulating information from millions of users, and harnessing that data to drive innovation. He also suggested that data would be useful to Beijing. “You have the most sufficient data, then you can make the most objective and accurate analysis,” he told Mr. Ma, according to state media accounts. “The suggestions to the government in this regard are very valuable.” More than eight years later, those suggestions are becoming demands. We know now that powerful elites are determined to follow China’s model. Everything that tech companies own can be nationalized and used to further a political purpose. The US is not immune from this, anymore than we were immune from China-style lockdowns. Our laws do not protect you or anyone. So I would suggest the following immediately. If you are using Chrome, download a new browser like [FireFox]( [Safari]( or [Brave](. Set your new browser as the default, import your old bookmarks, and delete Chrome from your machine (if you can). [Will this weird device be in your home soon?]( Change Your Search Engine Now While you are switching browsers, I would strongly recommend that you switch the default search engine that you use. (You can know which is currently your default simply by typing a search term in your browser. Whichever one you have chosen — and it is probably Google — will be the result.) Instead you should choose [DuckDuckGo]( as your default. It is a fantastic search engine in general, and offers far better, fairer, and more comprehensive news searches. Crucially, the company puts a premium on privacy. Just as importantly it is not trying to manipulate what you believe about the world via its results and tracking. I was a late adopter of this technology and now I find myself embarrassed that I had not switched years ago. I knew I was supposed to but somehow never got around to it. I’m sure you are the same: you keep hearing about something but don’t do it. Make the switch now, and you will thank me later. After doing this, [delete all your search history]( and any other activity records from your dealing with Google. This prevents all this data from being sold and marketed or otherwise pillaged during data breaches. Donald Trump – a Silicon Valley HERO? [Trump pointing both ways]( if Trump recently did something that could see him become a HERO in Silicon Valley? According to the man dubbed “The Tech Prophet” by Forbes, it’s true. A single Federal Ruling in the final year of Trump’s presidency could be about to unleash a tech revolution worth an estimated $15.1 trillion. In the words of one tech insider – a CEO who works closely with Microsoft, Intel and Google – it “will rewrite the rules of what is possible.” And it could create countless ways for you to grow your wealth. [Full story here.]( [This New Technology is about to reach “Critical Mass”]( Is Gmail a Problem? I think the answer to this question is probably yes, if not now then at some point in the future. Full disclosure that I still use it, which is a tribute to how network effects work in your own life. I used the same email for so many years, it would be hard to switch. I probably have another 12 addresses that feed into this one portal. That’s what trust gets you: the costs are changing and seem too high. That said, I know what I should do: switch to [Protonmail](. It’s a paid service, $5 per month. And this should not alarm you. Free products usually have a cost, and we’ve learned what this is. They want your profile and data on your habits in order to track you, sell your fingerprints, and commoditize your life. That’s the business model that turned the internet into a giant spying operation not only for business but also for governments. Protonmail, based in Switzerland, is a huge success and offers end-to-end encryption. It is not foolproof but it is leagues above the services offered by the tech giants. If you are at all in a position to switch, now seems like a good time – and just typing that is convincing me that I need to bite this bullet. Finally, Facebook People seem to be catching on to Facebook. It is not a platform that you can trust with your data and certainly not for its news coverage. As an organ of censorship and political manipulation, it is without equal. We know from Dr. Fauci’s emails that the company is massively partisan and willing to give up its entire platform for preaching whatever the government line is at the bottom. There is zero in the way of principle associated with this. Ideally, everyone would just leave the platform. I do not, if only to post my articles to people who are still there, and perhaps that makes me a hypocrite. But I know better than to spend time on the platform, much less post location data or information about family and friends. My prediction is that it will increasingly be used by both its managers and its main users, primarily for purposes of spying and pushing political propaganda. Today’s Prophecy George Gilder is absolutely right that today’s tech giants are dinosaurs, powerful, scary, in charge of the earth, but also destined for extinction. Sooner rather than later. You can do your part, and not by supporting the Republicans’ new interest in antitrust efforts. It’s entrepreneurship and market forces are what bury old companies and raise up new ones. There is a huge, if nascent, movement of consumers to bail from the companies that abuse people’s trust in order to spy on them. The new consumer market is going to be driven by the needs of people for privacy. This is not about trying to disappear. It’s about the normal desire not to have your entire life and every facet of it extracted, retained, sold, and possibly weaponized on behalf of people who do not have your best interests at heart. Fixing this requires consumers to be aware. And to act. It is happening now, and if enough people join in, we will see change even without the action of elected representatives.
