The United States Needs to Pass its Israel Test [George Gilder]Dear Daily Prophecy Reader, In Theo Padnos’ trenchant probe into Islam in his new book Blindfold — recounting his two years of intermittent torture in Syrian al Qaeda jails — the real blindfolds block the vision of the mainstream media. While Theo was being tortured in the basement of an Aleppo eye hospital, upstairs his captors were regaling the Washington Post with tales of “Islamic Law Comes to Rebel-Held Areas of Syria.” Reporter Liz Sly wrote on March 19, 2013: “The Eye Hospital” was turned into a “wartime City Hall… administering day-to-day matters such as divorce, marriage, and vehicle licensing.” She even quoted an incidental torture victim who had pushed an Al Qaeda flag aside during a parade and felt he was treated justly: “It was just a way of saying, ‘don’t do it again.’” This kind of gullible reporting continues to this day. [$10 billion bet... this is a real winner]( The American Presence Writes the estimable Defense One blog: “Syria is a bonafide counterterrorism success story” as in “a bloody battle for [provincial capital] Raqqa under Trump… thousands of Syrian Democratic Forces [mostly Kurds] but no Americans were killed.” Hey, the US ended up taking Raqqa, and everyone sighed with pride and relief. In a recent post, Katie Bo Williams reports from Syria: “Sometimes, US troops still have rocks and fruit thrown at them. But it’s hard to know how much of that is a political statement and how much of it is just bored kids doing what bored kids do in country towns all over the world.” The American presence, wrote Williams, was “keeping the roads of Syria safe and clear.” Sounds good, doesn’t it. Compare with the account of Joby Warrick of the Washington Post in his propulsive narrative Red Lines: The Unraveling of Syria and America’s Race to Destroy the Most Dangerous Arsenal in the World (2021). During the late years of the Trump Administration after the indignant resignations of Iraq hand Brett McGurk and Defense Secretary James Mattis, Warrick summed up the Syrian “success” in stark terms: “The war in Syria was effectively over. The entire country was in ruins, with a scale of devastation rivaling that of Germany and Japan after WWII. By 2020, the dead would number at least half a million. Another seven million were permanent refugees… An entire generation of children…[were left] vulnerable to poverty, radicalization, and violence.” Trump’s Final Gift To America [Trump]( a little-known way Trump could – one day – have his revenge. It involves a Federal Ruling he oversaw in the final year of his Presidency that could change America forever… unleash an estimated $15.1 trillion in new wealth… and create countless ways for everyday Americans to benefit. Russia retained its rights to the Khmeinin Air Base and access to the Mediterranean. In a Stanford professorial dreamworld, Russell Berman of the Hoover Institute called for a “genuine solution… a post-Assad Syria with democratic institutions” … “The US should break up the Moscow-Tehran-Damascus Axis,” he wrote. Do we really believe that Iran and Syria — with Russian guidance and engagement — is more dangerous than Iran alone with its jihadists and Israel obsession? Warrick’s book offers a different lesson. At its heart is the tale of one genuine US success in Syria, the arduous and ingenious dismantling and disarming of sarin nerve gas troves capable of killing 21 million people. Contrived in part by a CIA double agent and chemical virtuoso funded by the US, the arsenal was removed from Syria in a brilliant operation detailed by Warrick. This breakthrough followed a deal between Obama Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov. The Russian managed to bring Assad to terms in a matter of hours. Although Assad secretly held back some of the sarin, the joint US-Russian effort managed to remove the gas from sites all over Syria to a giant US ship designed to destroy chemical weapons. [Why Google, Apple, Facebook are teaming up?]( Today’s Prophecy Perhaps, contrary to the moralistic Quixote’s who run US foreign policy it is easier to deal with Russians and Chinese than with jihadist fanatics. Both the Russians and the Chinese after all are desirous of commerce and comity with Israel, which under my Israel Test is the only asset of importance in the Middle East. The perennial immutable motive of the jihadists, as expressed to Padnos by a young devout in pleated trousers and an Oxford shirt, when asked whether he wanted ransom money from Mark Zuckerberg: “We don’t want Zuck’s money. We want what we have always wanted. Victory for Islam… And we want death.” Al Qaeda dreams of “imminent combat between good and evil, millions of people dead, and a gorgeous utopia, for Muslims only, rising up from Aleppo’s ruins.” Perhaps with the assiduous help of the US, they got what they wanted in Syria. If the US is going to function successfully in the emerging world of the 21st Century, it must pass its Israel Test and forget its distractions of democratic desire in the desert.
