Theo Padnos Takes on Syria [George Gilder]Dear Daily Prophecy Reader, As our US democracy dissolves domestically into an Islamic whirl of dark masks and racialist myths — with political mullahs in niqabs issuing religious rants of climate vengeance, and waging holy war against a mostly harmless virus — I have been transported to Syria in the thrall of a just-published book by Theo Padnos. Called Blindfold, it is a masterpiece. Intimately probing the chimeras of Islamic and American belief in their endlessly misconceived alliances and death dealings. A virtuoso linguist who is fluent in Arabic, a family friend, and previously author of the fascinating Undercover Muslim about Yemini jihadists, Padnos was captured and tortured intermittently for two years by al Qaeda in Syria. A gripping film, Theo Who Lived (2016), told of his harrowing revelations in 2016. Padnos uses his blindfold, worn thin and diaphanous in places through years of wear, as a metaphor and a veil. “I could see and they did not know I could see. I brandished it at them as a talisman. [Wearing it] I could walk out from my cell into their world. The blindfold was my laissez passer. It was the little patch of magic carpet on which I traveled.” Similarly his mastery of Arabic, though known by his immediate guards, permitted him to understand myriad conversations around him over the years. He could hear and interpret, and most of his associates did not know he could. The Similarities are Uncanny With the Biden Administration cultivating new designs on Syria and inflicting its regime of masks and meddling on the United States, Blindfold is becoming ever more concussively topical. Among the jihadists, as Padnos reports, “Just as the Kalashnikov slays the enemy, the facemask — impersonal, unknowable, watching — represents the state.” As an exploration of American illusions, our violent raptures with the Islamic death cult, our Arabist infatuations and blindfolds, the Padnos revelation stems from nearly two years of acute and anguished observation of all the Syrian factions converging in some six Jihadi jails. In an unprecedented tour-de-force of intimate conversations with his al Qaeda torturers, his fellow inmates from all the multiple Syrian factions and from other American captives, he delved deep into his own and his captors’ delusions. There were bearded mullahs in black burkas from the Islamist front wearing suicide belts as symbols of righteous authority, ISIS soldiers of a new caliphate, Jebat al Nusra operatives of al Qaeda, and small boys lusting to “plunge into paradise.” Unifying them all were chiefly their hatred of Jews, fixation on YouTube videos of burning or beheaded Americans, and dreams of redemptive death amid a global Muslim victory and Shariah rule. The Alawite Shia supporters of dictator Bashar Assad shared these general apocalyptic sentiments. But the Sunni al Qaeda Jihadists believed all Alawites should be exterminated for various ninth century crimes and heresies. And everyone believed in the righteousness of torture and suicide bombs and the ultimate evil of Israel. “When there is torture,” Padnos wrote, “the prison reeks of the patchouli oil that the men in black put in their beards.” A revealing moment came late in Padnos’s captivity when Teach for America volunteer James Foley was decapitated on screen. On the morning of August 20, 2014, the video appeared everywhere. Wrote Padnos: “It was a stroke of genius… that brought ISIS to the front pages of every newspaper in the world.” He reported that his captors in the rival Jihadist al Qaeda group watched the video obsessively on their smartphones and most of them would have eagerly joined ISIS if they could. Watching titillated al Qaeda commanders fiddling with their screens to assure that the clip would play smoothly from beginning to end as they shared it with others through Bluetooth, Padnos realized that the driving force of the movement was a kind of pornography of violence. [Government rule to unleash $15.1 trillion?]( Will this tech kill 5G forever? of America’s leading tech investors believes so. It’s all thanks to a recent (and little-understood) Federal government decision that could radically reshape the tech industry. If you own 5G stocks… or get your cellphone or broadband from AT&T, Verizon, Sprint or T Mobile… you need to see this. [Here’s the full story.]( [No more banks. No more accountants. No more Wall Street?]( Reveling in the Violence Whether funded by oil, Qatar sheiks, or multi-billions of American aid, all factions wanted to torture him, kill Jews, and exterminate other Muslim factions. Before he was officially jailed, he was hung from his wrists and underwent two hours of excruciating shocks and beatings. Later, he was nearly suffocated in the trunk of a car. His assailants were officers of a Free Syrian Army post, the force most allied with and supported by the US (though his leading interrogator declared that “Bashar protects America’s baby girl, Israel. No matter what they say the Americans will always be on Bashar’s side.”) The beat goes on, with the Biden Administration dropping 500-pound bombs on Syrian desert sands, continuing operations in the Northeast regions, and maintaining a sprawling camp at al Hol in the desert that holds some 65,000 ISIS wives and children. Although always reluctant, Trump did it too, so this is not particularly a partisan issue. In addition, the Biden folk have a lot on their minds. They are also focused on fantasies of Chinese “climaticide” against the planet, and claimed “genocide” against Uygur Muslims in Xinqiang province, China’s Alaska, comprising a third of Chinese territory. A separatist group that has killed some 500 Chinese in coffee shops and railroad stations in the usual jihadist faith in redemption through suicide bombs, the Uygurs since 1949 have resisted integration with the body of China. In response, the Chinese government has created “reeducation camps” for around a million of the 12 million ethnics, where they are retrained in Mandarin and employment skills and the rebellious are occasionally abused horrifically (though killings, by most reports, have not approached the Uygur levels against Chinese). After our trillions of dollars expended on feckless wars in the Middle East in the wake of 9/11, perhaps the US could reach a moment of humility with regard to its virtue and vision in dealing with Islamists. The US still has to figure out its position in relation to the jihad. Padnos offers an optimistic perspective: “I felt that while the outside world viewed these men as a threat to global stability, I knew them to be too dim to fix their own pickup trucks. Medicine was beyond them. So was organizing an elementary school.” Today’s Prophecy When the Syrians achieved real powers, they most often came from American interventions and lavish funding, as when a CIA double agent helped contrive a huge trove of nerve gas sarin in the country capable of killing 21 million people, or when a billion-dollars-worth of advanced US weapons for the Free Syrian Army readily passed on to jihadists. (I’ll tell this story in a future Prophecy.) I emerged from these riveting pages corroborating my view in The Israel Test — that our only real interest in the Middle East is maintaining our ties with this country that is the source of much of America’s technology and power, and a focus of our investments. But simultaneous with Theo’s incarceration, another harrowing Syrian drama occurred with more significant global reverberations than climate change. I will bring these stories together in future prophecies.
