Masks on children may well impair the development of the fusiform gyrus, the crucial part of the brain that recognizes faces and facial expressions and renders us social beings rather than sociopaths. Not only were we smart, even our machines were smart — phones, cars, microwaves, chips, grids, toothbrushes, and refrigerators. There was peace, prosperity, a functioning healthcare system, and we were writing about a WiFi6 technology so capacious and multi-threaded that it could even eclipse our allegedly impending 5G wireless nirvana. The big threat according to such manifest geniuses as Raymond Kurzweil, the late Stephen Hawking, and Elon Musk was machines that could outthink us, as artificial intelligence (AI) approaches a “singularity.” In this predicted development, smart machines begin inventing and replicating ever smarter machines in a cascade of intelligence far beyond our reach or comprehension. As Elon Musk warned, these supreme machines will reduce us to mere pets, “if they are nice.” In my short book on AI (Gaming AI: Why AI can’t Think but can Transform Jobs), I pointed out that measured by the connections in our connectome, a single human mind operating on 12 to 14 watts of energy is more complex than the entire global internet that operates on gigawatts. To map a single human brain or to map the global internet both take the order of a zettabyte of information (10 to the 21st power). But the human mind can transcend mere logic to attain real understanding the fabric of the world. In games, machines can shuffle symbols at the gigahertz, and win. But in games, as in mathematical or computational logic, symbols are all that there are. But symbols are meaningless without connections to the real world maintained by human minds. As Charles Peirce of Harvard explained a hundred years ago, reality is not binary but triadic. Necessary to link symbols and objects — maps and territories — is an interpretant mind. Today’s Prophecy Human beings are demonstrably endowed with supreme intelligence encompassed by a creative consciousness. Moreover, we were proving it by reducing drastically the amount of time it takes to earn the money to buy the ever more intelligent goods and services of our economy. A new science of time-prices was demonstrating that economic growth has been proceeding far faster than is registered in any of the economic numbers and “inflation” adjustments.
