Between 1953 and 1958 at Bell Labs, he was a pioneer of the first quantum devices, elaborated from Zener diodes after their inventor Clarence Zener of Carnegie Mellon. Zener diodes could conduct in either direction, but were exceptionally useful when reverse-biased against the grain in “avalanche mode,” in which they provided a thermally balanced and controlled voltage. In “buried form,” Zeners are still widely used as voltage references or regulators, providing a stable source of voltage unaffected by changes in current. In this role, they function in the domain of classical electronic phenomena, as an “avalanche” of wrong-way electrons simply overcomes the resistance barrier of the device. Knowles was intrigued by the quantum aspect of Zeners, which was manifested when the silicon was “doped” to form a particularly abrupt p-n (positive-negative) junction. Applying less than a fifth of the avalanche voltage, electrons could be induced to “tunnel” through the barrier at five times the speed. In essence, the electrons tunneled through the voltage wall in the form of quantum waves, before slowing down and assuming mass that the barrier could stop. Showing that quantum effects could countervail the most sanctified rules of electricity and create a superfast device to boot, this line of research by Knowles — along with Leo Esaki in Japan and Carver Mead at Caltech and Intel — provided an important vindication of the new physics. It was no coincidence that Knowles along with Mead and his colleague Gordon Moore were pioneers of “Moore’s Law,” which predicted the doubling of transistor densities on microchips every two years until spontaneous quantum tunneling brings the parade to a close this decade. At Motorola, Knowles spearheaded the movement to automated wire bonding of microchips on printed circuit boards that still prevails in the industry. Then he left to form Metrologics, where over the next 40 years he pioneered and perfected the triggered hand-held omnidirectional laser bar code scanner, saw it conquer the world, and followed it with the first mini-slot barcode scanner. Now one of our companies, is attempting to replace Knowles’ scanners with radio frequency ID tags (RFID). In conjunction with face recognition technology, Amazon “Go” stores hope RFID and other tools can lead in a seamless in-and-out experience at retail without any need to stop at a counter. As Knowles told an interviewer at his Auburn University alma mater in 2008: “In the pursuit of success you will fail many, many times. You need to love what you do from dawn to dusk to pick up the pieces and put the next day together with the kind of enthusiasm it takes.” If Knowles’ move into the Shaker house across the way signaled the move of the US economy from finance to electronics, perhaps we can prophesize the future by exploring the biography of the new buyers of the house. Their names are Krishna and Muirih Yeshwant. Both are physicians, and Krishna also has a degree in computer science from Stanford and is part of a new business development team at Google Ventures. Yeshwant has moved from launching companies in data interchange (sold to HP) and network security (sold to Symantec) to a stream of biotech ventures. Krishna epitomizes the new frontier of information theory in the life sciences, where most of the successes are accomplished by people who, like Shannon himself, grasped the affinities between computer and biogenetic codes.
