Hi {NAME}, I found this interesting. Costa Rica is a blue zone… but they seem to live longer than the other blue zones. In fact, the average life expectancy of the Nicoyans (a region of Costa Rica) at age 60 is 7x more than a 60 year old in Japan. Unreal! There are obviously a lot of factors that come into play with this, but upon talking with a number of people that have lived in Costa Rica and evaluating their diets, it seems as though the bigger differentiating factor is…. More protein! The Nicoyans eat significantly more chicken and poultry than the other blue zones. Its interesting because when you look at many of the blue zones, they do wonderful things that definitely contribute to a long, healthy life, but many of them don’t consume that much protein. Insert Costa Rica… much of the same lifestyle as other blue zones but with the addition of more protein. Don’t get me wrong. They’re not animal based. They eat a lot of black beans, legumes, plantains, guava, etc. But they certainly eat more protein. The longevity research is strong suggesting that protein is critical for not just longevity, but for vitality and healthspan (feeling good for longer). Additionally, they also seem to eat more calories in the morning, and LESS at night. This is something we have seen in the literature to be quite powerful for healthy circadian cues and overall health. I would imagine their fasting glucose is lower as well, and probably have better metabolic health. As a matter of fact, what makes the Nicoyans so interesting is that they have very little instance of disease and illness… makes us wonder even more. Here’s a few other things that we can summarize: - High Antioxidant intake from fruit - Lots of sunshine - Very hard, mineral rich water consumption - Plan de vida (life with a purpose) - High Squash consumption (fiber and vitamin A) - Lots of activity I think we can adopt a lot of the blue zone principles, but I think we do need to make a solid point to not follow such a low protein approach that is often overemphasized (and often not even true). Out of all the blue zones, Costa Rica (Nicoyans specifically) makes the most sense to model after. SIDE NOTE I also want to make a mention of something in this newsletter for those of you that have dogs. We’ve been feeding our pups SUNDAYS, which is a human grade dog food (this means a human could eat it). It’s made a big difference, especially in our senior dogs (we have a 14 year old, 15 year old and 18 year old pup). I think we could apply what we know about human diet to our dogs as well. They have metabolic health, just like us, and if we feed them garbage, they’re going to feel like garbage. I was able to get my newsletter recipients a [35% off discount on Sundays](. Here is the link to try it: [( It feels really good to be able to have the whole family (dogs included) eating in line and living the lifestyle that we preach! Let’s live like the Costa Ricans for a bit, together! Thomas Sent to: {EMAIL} [Unsubscribe]( Thomas DeLauer, PO Box 1120, Stateline, NV 89449, United States
