Plus the finale of the Max series "Harley Quinn" and the debuts of two romance-infused streaming original films Plus the finale of the Max series "Harley Quinn" and the debuts of two romance-infused streaming original films Week of September 9 – 15 While the first signs of fall are upon us (days below 80 degrees, the odd leaf falling), the offerings on the small screen are hotter than every. This week we’ve got a new “Walking Dead” spin-off (“The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon”), new movies starring Michael Peña (“A Million Miles Away”) and “White Lotus” standout Haley Lu Richardson (“Love at First Sight”). Plus a new season of “The Morning Show,” a movie that casts a historical monster as an actual monster (“El Conde”) and two tense new thrillers – “Wilderness” and “The Other Black Girl.” On with the television! The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Sunday, September 10 at 9 p.m., AMC Source: AMC While the mainline “Walking Dead” series has ended (and its initial spin-off, “Fear the Walking Dead,” will conclude later this year), there is still plenty of life left in the franchise. Following “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” which dropped earlier this summer, comes “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” which will follow the fan favorite character (once again played by Norman Reedus) from the original series. This time, Daryl has washed ashore in France. (France, in “Walking Dead” lore, is where the original zombie virus came from.) While there, Daryl falls in love with Isabelle (the great Clémence Poésy), who tasks Daryl with protecting a young boy named Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) who the sect believes can lead humanity to a new age. No pressure! Early word on the series has been strong, with [our critic describing]( the show as a “surprisingly gorgeous, soul-stirring, and riveting watch.” Run, don’t walk, for this one. [[TRAILER](] Harley Quinn Thursday, September 14, Max Source: MAX On August 24, we lost Arleen Sorkin, the actress who provided the original voice for Harley Quinn and whose spirit inspired the original character (her friend Paul Dini created HQ for “Batman: The Animated Series” with Arleen in mind). But what a testament to the power of her performance that it is still inspiring countless iterations, including this adult animated series for Max. If you’ve never watched “Harley Quinn,” it focuses on the character (now voiced by Kaley Cuoco) as she solves crimes, commits crimes and falls in love with Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), a relationship that was hinted at way back in the “Batman: The Animated Series” days. This season is even bigger and more ambitious, weaving in tons of Batman lore while still maintaining the series’ irreverence and off-the-wall sense of humor. Come on puddin’, you know you want to watch! [[TRAILER](] El Conde Friday, September 15, Netflix Source: Netflix The latest biographical film from Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín is a little different from his previous movies like “Jackie” and “Spencer” – “El Conde” imagines U.S.-backed dictator Augusto Pinochet as an immortal vampire whose quest for power is only matched by his literal hunger for blood. The film, which just premiered on the fall festival circuit, is already receiving rave reviews. It’s supposed to be a violent, hilarious horror comedy with a timely political bent. If this isn’t already on your most anticipated movies list, then it probably should be. [[TRAILER](] Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Wednesday, September 13, Disney+ Source: Disney+ The “Assembled” series of documentaries from Marvel Studios, which usually coincide with the release of a new movie or streaming series, have proven to be worthwhile, with some of them taking on unusual, wholly welcome forms. (The best one yet is the “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” installment, which is fashioned like one of those old specials that would air in prime time in the 1980’s and ‘90s, complete with just-cheesy-enough hosting by Bruce Campbell.) We don’t know what this making-of doc about “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will be, but considering how great the movie was (and how hands-on writer/director James Gunn has been, at least before he left to run DC), this should be a must-watch documentary special. [[TRAILER](] The Walking Dead Netflix Source: AMC Why not use the excuse of the newest “The Walking Dead” spin-off’s arrival to go back and watch the original series? Remember that the show was, at one point, the most popular television series on television and the first season, which was run and largely written by “The Shawshank Redemption” filmmaker Frank Darabont, was a perfect little jewel of horror storytelling. (Darabont was fired from the show midway through the second season and was later embroiled in a costly and time-consuming legal battle over compensation.) As the show went on, the seasons got bigger, broken up into chunks throughout the year (but always new episodes around Halloween for obvious reasons). Ultimately the series ran for 11 seasons and a whopping 177 episodes. Relive the glory days, when shocking deaths, major twists and even bigger cliffhangers were all a part of the fun. [[WATCH](] Source: Hulu “The Morning Show” Wednesday, September 13, Apple TV+ “The Morning Show” is back for a third season. (Remember when we all thought this was a limited series? We were fools!) Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are back as co-hosts of the titular television series, with Nicole Beharie playing a new anchor this season and Jon Hamm as a rival executive. And this season the network is the target of a cyber-attack! Also worth getting excited about – the excellent Tig Notaro joins this season in a supporting role. And yes, the show has already been renewed for a fourth season. [[TRAILER](] “The Other Black Girl” Wednesday, September 13, Hulu An adaptation of the 2021 best-selling novel of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris (who collected a cool $1 million advance when the book went up for auction), “The Other Black Girl” follows Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel), who works at a fictional publishing company. When another Black girl (Ashleigh Murray from “Riverdale”) is hired, strange things start to happen, leading Nella on a quest to discover the sinister history of her employer. Seems spooky and very cool, with Harris and Rashida Jones penning the first episode and production courtesy of the Onyx Collective and Temple Hill. This could be a sleeper hit. [[TRAILER](] “Wilderness” Friday, September 15, Prime Video This British co-production (we love those, don’t we?) is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by B. E. Jones. The tag line on the dust jacket of the book is “Love can hurt. Betrayal can kill.” That should give you a good idea of the show. British couple Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) are living in America but their idyllic relationship is rocked by infidelity. They attempt to reconcile with a trip through America’s National Forests but revenge is hanging heavy in the air. It also stars Ashley Benson and Eric Balfour. The trailer got a lot of buzz for including a newly recorded "Taylor’s Version" of Taylor Swift's “Look What You Made Me Do.” Hopefully the show is just as good. [[TRAILER](] “Love at First Sight” Friday, September 15, Netflix Based on “The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight” by Jennifer E. Smith, the Netflix romance “Love at First Sight” stars Haley Lu Richardson as Hadley Sullivan and Ben Hardy as Oliver Jones. Hadley’s habit of running late usually complicates her life, but when she misses her flight by four minutes, it might be the one time that fate dealt her a good hand. Of course, she happens to align with Oliver Jones at the airport, a boy who never gets taken by surprise and is prepared for every situation. Directed by Vanessa Caswill with an adapted script by Katie Lovejoy (“To All the Boys: Always and Forever”),the film tackles not only the possibility of love at first sight, but timing, fate and many more concepts of the human condition. [[TRAILER](] “A Million Miles Away” Friday, September 15, Prime Video This inspirational family drama is based on the true story of Jose Hernandez (Michael Peña), a migrant farm worker who dreamed of becoming an astronaut at NASA. Spoiler: he got there. Beyond some questionable de-aging techniques that you can see in the trailer, this looks like rousing, all-ages entertainment. Rosa Salazar, and Garret Dillahunt also star in the film directed by Alejandra Márquez Abella. Watch with someone you’re comfortable crying in front of.
