Fashion Writer Merle Ginsberg highlights the top looks. For this year's 2023 Oscars, TheWrap introduces its first style awards for fashion's biggest night with one of the most credible Oscar fashion prognosticators, journalist Merle Ginsberg. TheWrap's first fashion awards specifically for brands, stars and stylists who walk off with the winning numbers of the night. Which studios or streamers got the most Academy Awards is always a hot media tally. But in fashion, jewelry and beauty worlds, there are winners -- and losers -- of every red carpet, too. Each year, stylists, actors and brands compete for press, praise -- and power. Oscar-winning movies and actors make more money, advance in status. Well, so do the brands that triumph with the very best looks: gowns, tuxes, jewels, accessories, hair, makeup -- on the biggest runway in the world. Oscar Red Carpet Arrivals Source: Getty Images The 2023 Oscar red carpet -- even though the carpet was technically "champagne" hued -- was as colorful as it was filled by the grandest array of gowns and tuxes the Academy Awards have seen in years. Old Hollywood is back, baby! The Oscars had a few rough years, it’s true. But 2023’s show and looks are a huge improvement upon the pandemic years. From diamond choker necklaces to corset gowns to odd-for-Oscars orange gowns -- the looks were diverse, detailed -- and divine. Trends include ruched gowns, asymmetrical sleeves -- and a lot of lingerie looks. Oscars Best and Worst Moments Source: Getty Images From animal guests to thoughtful acceptance speeches, the 2023 Oscars had several best moments and a few worst. Jimmy Kimmel's monologue warmed up the audience for the moments to follow, as did the "Everything Everywhere All at Once" domination of the acting categories and Best Picture win. Kimmel lost momentum when he turned to random members of the audience to ask irrelevant questions, and those responsible for playing off winners didn’t do so consistently. Here are TheWrap’s best and worst moments of the 2023 Oscars. Vanity Fair Arrivals Source: Getty Images The Vanity Fair party’s early arrivals scene was almost as colorful as the Oscars. Vanity Fair’s blue carpet for its annual viewing dinner and after-party was held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, presided over by VF editor Radhika Jones. Early arrivals included Matt Bomer, Queen Latifah, Donald Glover, Tom Ford, Nancy and Paul Pelosi, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Jon Hamm and new fiancee Anna Osceola, Jennifer Coolidge -- and early best-dressed star, Naomi Watt, in Givenchy white feathers. Olivia Wilde, in a Gabriela Hearst black bra with white dress falling off, as if fresh from a wardrobe malfunction. Oscar Fashion Details Source: Getty Images It’s all in the details, isn’t it? Whether it’s dangling chandelier earrings (Chopard on Emily Blunt), or small sculpted ones (on Jamie Lee Curtis), a sparkly diamond choker (Tiffany’s on Lady Gaga), an iconic diamond snake coiled around a delicate neck (Bulgari Serpenti on Angela Bassett), long smooth hair with Old Hollywood waves (Renato Campora) for Jessica Chastain, or 1950s-style rich red lips (Michelle Williams’ makeup by Angela Levin), Oscar style is made up of many elements, from head to toe. In this case, the whole is actually equal to the sum of the parts. 2034 Armacost Ave | Los Angeles, CA 90025 [Preferences]( | [Unsubscribe](
