No images? [Click here]( JAMIE'S LIST Where to Eat and What to Order Sundance Film Festival Edition WAITING FOR A TABLE: Happy New Year All. This is a very exciting newsletter because not only is going to my regular list, but it is also going to a whole new crew who are subscribers to [The Wrap](, Sharon Waxman's industry bible. We are cooking up some things together so stay tuned. Ok onto this week's topic, honestly one of my favorite times of the year, [Sundance](. The last three years without an in person Sundance Film Festival have been a real bummer. I look forward to Sundance all year long for so many reasons. From the new filmmakers to the old friends to the time in the snow, the list goes on and on. I have so many amazing memories from being there in 2005 with my first film Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden's HALF NELSON to Derek Cianfrance's BLUE VALENTINE to Elgin James' LITTLE BIRDS to Matt Ross' CAPTAIN FANTASTIC and every other film in between. I love it all. However, for a handful of reasons, our film festivals are in a precarious time. Because of the industry's decision to place less effort on adult dramas and "independent films", festivals are having a tougher and tougher time surviving and getting the level of films that we are used to. That might not seem to be a big issue, but when you consider the filmmakers whose careers were started in part by Sundance (and other festivals) it becomes a bit scary to think about the creative hole that this could lead to. In case you need a reminder, here are just a few of the directors that got their big breaks at Sundance: Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Damien Chazelle, Darren Aronofsky, James Wan, Ryan Coogler, Chloe Zhao, Jon Watts, Jordan Peele, Martin McDonagh, Rei Green, Rian Johnson, The Daniels, Taika Waititi, and many more. The industry, the theaters, the streamers, the studios are all a part of this problem and if they don't act fast we are going to wake up in a few years and when we look around to see who is going to direct the next GET OUT or the next SPIDER-MAN or the next BLACK PANTHER there is going to be nobody standing there. My bottom line to the industry: take chances, support new voices, promote those voices, celebrate those voices or else the entire industry will suffer. One way to do that today is to participate in this year's festival online it isn't the same as being there in person, but it will still make an impact. [Buy tickets here.]( In addition you can support the [Sundance Institute]( which is where all these brilliant filmmakers got their first breaks. OK, now on to the more relevant information for this week's newsletter, where to eat at Sundance. First contrary to popular belief there are places to eat in Park City and in a couple of instances very good places. Now I won't lie most of the Park City spots don't stand up to the big city offerings, so these reviews have to be taken with a grain of salt, but give me some Camarones a la Diabla from El Chubasco or a Lobster Roll from Freshies and I will be a happy man. - Jamie Patricof, founder of Jamie's List [Subscribe to Jamie's List]( Jamie’s List curates where to eat and what to order in LA and beyond. Brought to you by producer Jamie Patricof known for films like HALF NELSON, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES & CAPTAIN FANTASTIC. NOTE: Sundance restaurants are notorious for closing earlier or later than their hours state so always a good idea to call and check first. 1) [El Chubasco]( - the only really great food in Park City. Honestly, if this restaurant was in L.A., it still might be a top choice for me. The OG crew is always mad when I tell people about El Chubasco, so please be quick with your orders and know what you want (everything). A couple of highlights: if you like spicy, Camarones a la Diabla and the Chile Relleno. They now have a to-go window which is huge! They are always busy, but it is quick, so the wait is never too bad. It's rare a day at Sundance if I haven't had at least one meal there. They also have a new online ordering system through their website. 435-645-9114 11am-9pm Order online through: POSTMATES, UBER EATS, ACTIVEMENUS Reservations: Does not take reservations 2) [Bangkok Thai On Main]( - good Thai food, close to everything. Always busy, but you can walk in, just be prepared to wait. Also another great take out option. Order the Lobster & Mango Spring Rolls, Po Pia Tod, Pad Thai. 435-649-8424 12pm-10:30pm Order online through: POSTMATES, UBER EATS, ACTIVEMENUS Reservations: Takes reservations through their website 3) [Freshies Lobster]( - great for a bite in between films. The lobster is flown out from Maine daily. Order the Clam Chowder, Lobster Bisque or (obviously) the Lobster Roll. If you are feeling frisky add a hot dog. 435-631-9861 11am-8pm Order online through: DOORDASH, CAVIAR, GRUBHUB Reservations: Does not take reservations 4) [Davanza]( - a real local spot with phenomenal interior decor (vintage beer cans stacked to the ceilings) and even better food options. Everyone is here for the pizza, but try other things like the Wings, Mozzarella Sticks, Meatball Parmesan Sub or Philly Cheesesteak. They also have tacos, but I can't imagine ordering one. Great for take out as well. 435-649-2222 11am-10pm Does NOT offer online ordering. To order, calling is preferred. Reservations: Does not take reservations 5) [Pine Cone Ridge]( (aka Wahso) - Probably my favorite of the nicer Park City restaurants probably just because I love Asian food. It's a Prix Fixe menu during the festival, but it is the whole menu so you have lots of choices. 435-615-0300 5pm-10pm Order online through: TOAST LOCAL Reservations: Takes reservations through OPEN TABLE 6) [Yuki Yama]( - high top bar tables, traditional tatami room, sushi bar, Yuki Yama has versatile seating in addition to a great menu. Order the Shishito Peppers, Savory Pork Ramen or anything off the Sushi menu, but remember you aren't in NY or L.A., so keep your expectations realistic for the sushi. 435-649-6293 11:30pm-3pm and 5pm-10pm Order online through: TOAST LOCAL (pick-up only; they do NOT deliver) Reservations: Takes reservations through OPEN TABLE 7) [P]([ark City Roadhouse Grill]( - an incredible array of beer on draft that goes hand in hand with comfort food that will warm you up from the snow. Order the Chicken Fried Steak and lots of beer. 435-649-9868 8am-10pm Does NOT offer online ordering. To order, calling is preferred. Reservations: Takes reservations through OPEN TABLE 8) [The]([Eating Establishment]( - best breakfast in Park City. You have to get The Hungry Miner: 2 basted eggs, seasoned potatoes, melted cheddar, onions, ham, green peppers, mushrooms and toast. But good luck not falling asleep during your next movie. 435-649-8284 Daily: 8am-10pm Order online through: TOAST LOCAL (pick-up only; they do NOT deliver) Reservations: Takes reservations through YELP 9) [Collie's]( - a great sports bar for the hits: Nachos, Wings, Burgers, etc. It's open on the later side (for Park City) and pretty easy to get a table. If all else fails, hit Collie's! 435-649-0888 10am-12am (kitchen closes at 11pm) Order online through: TOAST LOCAL (pick-up only; they do NOT deliver) Reservations: Does not take reservations 10) [High West Saloon]( - incredible, locally made whiskey. Honestly, I have never eaten here but their Barreled Manhattan is one of my favorite drinks. You can buy it there or in your home city. If you have time to go while at Sundance, get a flight of four whiskey tastings. I hear the food is a great companion: get the Elk Chili, Bison Short Ribs or Chicken Schnitzel. 435-649-8300 11am-10pm Order online through: TOAST LOCAL (pick-up only; they do NOT deliver) Reservations: Does not take reservations 11) [Tupelo]( - upscale American that places emphasis on the cocktail list as much as the menu. Order the Buttermilk Biscuits, Deviled Eggs, Roasted Mushrooms, Pan Seared Utah Trout, Roasted Duck Breast, Pan Seared Bass. And for cocktails try the Mezcal Mule, Miss Beehavin' or Cherry in the Rye 435-615-7700 Mon-Thurs: 3pm-10pm, Fri-Sun: 11am-2pm & 3pm-10pm Order online through: no ordering online, call to place order Reservations: Takes reservations through RESY 12) [Handle]( - Solid farm to table plates. Order the General Tso's Cauliflower, Fried Chicken Breast, Mushroom Bolognese, "The Baller" Prime Ribeye 435-602-1155 Sun-Thurs: 5pm-10pm, Fri-Sat: 5pm-11pm Order online through: no ordering online, call to place order Reservations: Takes reservations through YELP 13) [Butcher's Chop House]( - for when you can't get into Prime Steakhouse but still need a Prime Rib! Order the Prime Rib, The Burger, Lamb Chop, Chicken Fried Chicken or Swiss Brownie Sundae. The food is nothing to write home about, but sadly because of its location, hours and availability, inevitably I eat at Butcher's more than anywhere else (besides El Chubasco). 435-647-0040 Daily: 11am-1am Order online through: no ordering online, call to place order Reservations: Takes reservations through RESY 14) [Wasatch Bagels]( - It's no H&H or Courage but it sure is a nice treat on the way to or from an 8:30am screening. They have all the usual bagel store items but try the "Loxwich" which was introduced to me in 2005 by Alex Yarosh and I have loved ever since. 435-649-4000 Daily: 11am-11pm Order online through: DOORDASH Reservations: Does not take reservations 15) [Deer Valley Cafe]( - located in the Deer Valley Plaza in Snow Park, it's an easy spot for a bite between runs on the slope. I usually don't support skiing during Sundance but I have begun to make an exception. Everything is house-made and delicious! Order the Deer Valley Turkey Chili, any of the house made breads/baked goods or French Toast for breakfast. 435-615-2400 7:30am-6pm Order online through: The Deer Valley Cafe website Reservations: Does not take reservations 16) [Java Cow]( - where else can you get coffee AND ice cream! Great for a quick sweet treat after a screening at The Egyptian Theater. Order whatever flavor ice cream you like. 435-647-7711 8am-9pm Order online through: no ordering online, call to place order for pick up Reservations: Does not take reservations 17) [Silver Star Cafe]( - featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, this cafe features live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. It's a hidden gem sure to make your Sundance trip even better. 435-655-3456 Mon-Fri: 11am-2:45pm, 5:30pm-9pm, Sat-Sun: 9am-2:45am, 5:30pm-9pm Order online through: TOAST Reservations: Takes reservations through RESY 18) [Goldener Hirsch]( - Few things sound better after trudging through the snow than some melty, hot cheese. Goldener Hirsch features awesome Austrian food including fondue! So order the fondue. 435-655-2563 7am-3:30pm, 5pm-10pm Order online through: no ordering online, call to place order for pick up Reservations: Takes reservations through OPEN TABLE or restaurant website LEFTOVERS: Something I'm psyched about Every year I am a part of the Academy International Feature Film committee because I love getting a chance to see all the incredible films coming from across the world and every year the movies are so damn good. This year is no different, there are so many great ones to see but if you only have a chance to see a couple make sure to put [CLOSE](, [HOLY SPIDER]( & [ARGENTINA, 1985]( on your list. They are all currently in theaters (with the exception of CLOSE which will start showing on Jan 26) and if you don't catch them there, they will all be streaming soon. Just a note when you watch CLOSE make sure you have a full box of Kleenex. THE CREW: These are the people that make Jamie's List possible. The list of chefs, foodies, journalists make up the team that helps bring you my recommendations. I truly believe it is impossible for one person's taste to be identical to another's so I will only recommend a restaurant if multiple people and/or publications co sign it. Below are those people. I am always looking for new members, so hit me up.
