In terms of new shows and movies this week, there are plenty, from HBOâs buzzy new series [âThe Last of Usâ]( to a COVID-set slasher movie from the writer of âScreamâ to an adorable stop-motion series set on an island full of shapes, no matter what youâre looking for, thereâs something to fill that need. On with the television! [Premiere of the week]
âThe Last of UsâSunday, January 15 at 9 p.m., HBO [the-last-of-us-pedro-pascal] Photo: HBO Ready to be wrecked? âThe Last of Us,â based on the best-selling video game and adapted by the gameâs creator Neil Druckmann and âChernobylâ writer Craig Mazin, is grim stuff. But itâs also [one of the best](, most compelling, most thoroughly haunting shows in recent memory. Pedro Pascal stars as a man who has lost his child during the outbreak of a fungal infection that basically turns people into ravenous zombies. (Theyâre not really zombies but you get the idea.) The feature-length premiere this week is thrilling, for sure, but the series has bigger emotional stakes and much more on its mind, particularly when Pascal, years after the initial outbreak, is charged with ferrying a young girl to a mysterious medical outpost. This is the new HBO show that everyone will be talking about. Get in on the conversation on the ground floor. Just watch out for those fungal-infected zombies. [[INTERVIEW](]

âThe ResidentâTuesday, January 17 at 8 p.m., Fox [The Resident] Photo: Fox The popular Fox medical drama, starring Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, explores the drama of the doctors as much as the bureaucratic forces that often are conspiring against them. Incredibly, this show has been on the air for six seasons and for more than 100 episodes. Make that syndication money! [[TRAILER](]

âSickâPeacock [Sick] Photo: Peacock This was announced moments after the last TV Watch List went up and dropped today (Friday the 13th) on the Universal-owned direct-to-consumer streaming platform. But we had to include it. This is the movie of the week for sure. Itâs somewhat hard to talk about âSick,â both because of the ruthless efficiency of its simple premise and because itâs best to know as little as possible going in. Howâs this? Gideon Adlon and Bethlehem Million star as two college girls who decide to quarantine at a lakehouse, away from their college and the city. While there, they are terrorized by a masked man. The movie was co-written by Kevin Williamson, who created âScreamâ with Wes Craven, and was directed by John Hyams, who has a sterling filmography of low-budget cheapies that also function as high art. (Yes, this includes his two direct-to-video âUniversal Soldierâ sequels.) âSickâ played the fall festivals to rapturous response. Now itâs time to get rowdy in your living room. [[WATCH](]

âIcons Unearthed: Fast & FuriousâMonday, January 16 at 9 p.m., VICE [Fast and Furious] Photo: Universal Listen, thereâs not an abundance of documentary options this week. I donât make the rules. But the âIcons Unearthedâ series on Vice is surprisingly in depth and probably just as snappy and fun as youâd expect. A recent series on the making of âStar Warsâ was an absolute joy and, since they arenât inhibited by corporate concerns, was wonderfully warts-and-all. Hopefully the same mixture of rigorous history and off-the-wall antics will apply to the documentary series about the âFast and Furiousâ series, perhaps Hollywoodâs unlikeliest blockbuster franchise ever. âThe LeftoversâHBO Max [Leftovers] Photo: HBO Before âThe Last of Usâ (or even âStation Elevenâ), âThe Leftoversâ was HBOâs premiere post-apocalyptic opus. The story of what would happen if 2% of the worldâs population was suddenly zapped away (referred to as the âSudden Departureâ), âThe Leftoversâ shares with âThe Last of Usâ a potential combination of existential dread and deep emotional catharsis. Justin Theroux plays the chief of police in a sleepy New England town whose wife has joined a potentially dangerous cult called the Guilty Remnant and whose rebellious teenage daughter he doesnât know what to do with. But what started off as a small-scale domestic drama takes some wild swings during its three seasons (season 2 is set in Texas in a town where only one person disappeared; season 3 takes place in Australia for reasons best left discovered), finding new and exciting ways to explore its central premise. Itâs one of the greatest shows of the modern era and a worthwhile watch if youâve never made the leap. [[WATCH](]
[- - -] [Premiere of the week] âMayor of KingstownâSunday, January 15, Paramount+The sun never sets on the Taylor Sheridan empire. Jeremy Renner (get well soon!) stars as Mike McLusky, the titular âmayorâ of a for-profit prison, in this drama from the creator of âYellowstone.â Season 2 should bring more of the high-stakes drama and insightful social commentary that made the first season such a hit. Letâs hope this mayor gets re-elected. [[TRAILER](] âMiracle Workers: End TimesâMonday, January 16 at 10 p.m., TBSHowâs this for a harrowing fact? âMiracle Workersâ is the last scripted show currently airing on TBS. Anyway, this comedic anthology show from Simon Rich turns to a post-apocalyptic future for this, its fourth season. Daniel Radcliffe and Geraldine Viswanathan) return alongside âMiracle Workersâ regulars Steve Buscemi, Jon Bass, and Karan Soni, this time joined by Paul F. Tompkins, Ego Nwodim, Quinta Brunson, and Lolly Adefope. Should be fun! [[TRAILER](] âNight CourtâTuesday, January 17 at 8 p.m., NBCWith âNight Courtâ back alongside a new version of âQuantum Leap,â is NBC singlehandedly recreating its prime-time programming line-up from 1989? 2023 âNight Courtâ follows the familiar reboot/sequel format of other revivals, with original star John Larroquette returning as his original character and Melissa Rauch leading the new cast. (Itâs sad to think how many of the stars of the original show, including Markie Post and Charles Robinson, are no longer with us. But Richard Moll is still around! Bring him back!) The original show was kind of underrated and often took chances on darker themes and material. This new version looks much lighter but still good hit that nostalgia button we all crave. [[TRAILER](] âThat â90s ShowâThursday, January 19, NetflixAnd speaking of nostalgia, yes, weâre going back to the âThat â70s Showâ well once again. This time the action takes place in the 1990s, a mostly boring decade that somehow current kids find very appealing, and follows Leia Forman (Callie Haverda), the daughter of Topher Grace and Lauren Preponâs characters from the original series. Since the original cast members only return as cameos, the heavy lifting is instead handled by Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith as Leiaâs grandparents. To use some â90s jargon, this new show should be pretty extreme. [[TRAILER](] âShape TownâFriday, January 20, Apple TV+Based on the internationally bestselling picture books from Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen, this new stop-motion animation series starring Yvette Nicole Brown, Harvey Guillen, Scott Adsit and Gideon Adlon looks charming as hell. Itâs set on an island inhabited by shapes. What do we have to spell it out for you? [[TRAILER](] [- - -] That does it for this weekâs edition of The Wrapâs Winter TV Watch List.
