[- - -] [TheWrap - SUMMER TV WATCH LIST] Week of November 26 â December 3 This week, we cross the Rubicon from November to December. That means the holidays are in full effect, you will probably be even more pressed for time (hello, mandatory office parties). But if you choose to stay in for the evening, get ready, because there is a ton of stuff coming to the small screen, from a new version of âWillowâ (yes, the 1980s fantasy movie), to a new Tilda Swinton charmer, to the return of âGossip Girlâ and a Netflix movie about a giant troll (also: a Netflix documentary about Robert Downey Sr.). Christmas might not have come early but thereâs still plenty to unwrap. On with the television! [Premiere of the week]
âWillowâ
Wednesday, November 30, Disney+ [willow-warwick-davis] Photo: Lucasfilm âWillow,â a fantasy adventure produced by George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard, has built up a cult since it premiered in 1988. This lavishly produced Disney+ series serves as a continuation of the original story, which focused on a pint-size magician (played by the great Warwick Davis) saving a baby while Val Kilmer hammed it up as an amoral scoundrel. The new show, developed and written by Jon Kasdan, follows the title wizard (Davis again) as he trains a new batch of magicians â including the grown version of the baby he saved in the original film (is she still the chosen one?) It’s full of quippy one-liners, a cast of young performers and a storyline that isnât so cumbersomely wed to the original film or its mythology. [[PREVIEW](]

âThe PeripheralâWednesday, November 23, Prime Video [the-peripheral-chloe-grace-moretz] Photo: Prime Video There is so much stuff coming out each and every week, at such alarming velocity, that itâs hard to keep up. Did you even know that âThe Peripheral,â the high-concept adaptation of William Gibsonâs novel of the same name from âWestworldâ executive producers Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy, was wrapping up its eight-episode first season on Prime Video? Because it is! The show was developed and largely written by Scott B. Smith, the amazing novelist and screenwriter behind âA Simple Plan,â and featured a terrific cast including Chloë Grace Moretz, Jack Reynor, T’Nia Miller and Alex Hernandez. Plus, a nifty premise that felt like cyberpunkâs answer to a time travel narrative. [[INTERVIEW](]

âThe Eternal DaughterâFriday, December 2, PVOD [The Eternal Daughter] Photo: A24 A24 is launching several movies this holiday season, mostly modestly scaled dramas like Jennifer Lawrenceâs âCausewayâ and Darren Aronofskyâs Brendan Fraser-led âThe Whale.â But if youâre looking for something a little spookier for these chilly winter evenings, look no further than âThe Eternal Daughter.â Written and directed by Joanna Hogg (âThe Souvenirâ films), the film follows a writer (played by frequent collaborator Tilda Swinton) who goes to a clearly haunted hotel with her elderly mother (also Swinton) to work on a new project. Filled with shout-outs and references to other, more outwardly scary horror classics, âThe Eternal Daughterâ weaves its own kind of spell before an unexpectedly emotional climax. [[INTERVIEW](]

âSr.âFriday, December 2, Netflix [Robert Downey Sr. and Robert Downey Jr. Chris Smith] Photo: Netflix Directed by the great Chris Smith (âAmerican Movie,â Netflixâs eight-part âThe Disappearance of Madeleine McCannâ), âSr.â chronicles the life of Robert Downey Sr., the actor and filmmaker behind 1960s counterculture favorite âPutney Swope.â As an actor, he appeared in âTo Live and Die in L.A.â and two early films for Paul Thomas Anderson. PTA also appears on camera in âSr.,â alongside Robert Downey Jr., Alan Arkin and Norman Lear. The documentary, which features footage of Downey Sr. before his passing in 2021, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this year, where it received warm reviews. (Rodrigo Perez from The Playlist called it âa beautiful tribute and a wonderful farewell to a legend, father, and artist.â) [[TRAILER](]

âAddams Family ValuesâNetflix Photo: Paramount What better way to come down from Thanksgiving gluttony than to revisit the best depiction of the beloved American holiday ever captured on film? In 1993’s “Addams Family Values,” Wednesday Addams (Christina Ricci) goes memorably off-script in a summer-camp pageant re-creation of the first Thanksgiving with her more fact-based depiction of Pocahontas. The film is a comedy classic, and it also serves as a good counterpoint to the new Netflix series starring Jenna Ortega as older, arguably even more goth version of Wednesday. [[WATCH](]
[- - -] [Premiere of the week] âCrime Scene: The Texas Killing FieldsâTuesday, November 29, NetflixIn 2021, Netflix debuted âCrime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel,â which chronicled the mysterious death of Elisa Lam and other strange happenings at a fleabag hotel in downtown Los Angeles. It was quickly followed by an installment about the Times Square Killer. And now the third entry is here, set in the heart of Texas. This limited series, executive produced by Ron Howard, details the murders of young women along a stretch of highway around Houston. The doc takes many twists and turns, all of them totally horrifying. [[TRAILER](] âIrreverentâWednesday, November 30, PeacockWeirdly, the show was co-produced by Netflix in Australia and New Zealand but is hitting Peacock in the United States. Paddy Macrae created the series, which hinges on an irresistible concept: An American criminal (played by Colin Donnell) is forced to hide out in a backwater Australian town after a heist, posing as the townâs new minister. Weâre guessing that thereâs going to be a ton of high jinks but that the show will ultimately have more of an emotional center than youâre probably expect. #Blessed. [[TRAILER](] âGossip GirlâThursday, December 1, HBO MaxThe âGossip Girlâ redo (developed by Joshua Safran and executive produced by original creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage) is back for its second season. Expect a lot of high-society infighting, young girls calling each other âbitchâ (affectionately), suggestive flirting and outfits that look really amazing but that you could probably never afford. [[TRAILER](] âTrollâThursday, December 1, NetflixItâs been a while since an offbeat foreign genre movie has really captured our hearts â in the same way that something like âRinguâ or âLet the Right One Inâ did. But âTrollâ could fill that hole. Directed and co-written by the great Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (âThe Waveâ), âTrollâ is a Godzilla-ish monster movie about a giant troll who wakes up and causes havoc. The trailer is totally killer, looking like an expertly crafted mixture of monster thrills and human drama. And the best part is, you donât have to watch it under a bridge. [[TRAILER](] âDarby and the DeadâFriday, December 2, HuluThis could be a good YA alternative for the whole family this holiday season. âDarby and the Deadâ stars Riele Downs as a teen girl Darby who has the ability to see ghosts. Of course, what could have potentially been seen as a gift turns into an all-out nightmare when the bitchy girl at her school (AuliÊ»i Cravalho) dies and comes back to haunt her. Sounds like if âThe Sixth Senseâ had more teenage-girl drama. [[TRAILER](] [- - -] That does it for this weekâs edition of The Wrapâs Summer TV Watch List.
