Fall TV Watch List: Emily Blunt's Western Bloodlust; 'The Crown' Returns No images? [Click here]( [- - -] [TheWrap - SUMMER TV WATCH LIST] Week of November 5 – 11 With Halloween behind us and the holidays still up ahead, it feels like a nice time to pause, regroup and put on your favorite fuzzy sweater. This week, there will be plenty to stay in and curl up to, from a new limited series starring Emily Blunt on a blood-splattered quest for vengeance, to a documentary on the life and crime of Phil Spector to a return to “Zootopia” and the royal politics of “The Crown.” Also, on a much sadder note, it’s the end of “Atlanta.” But you know what the song says – there is a season turn, turn, turn. On with the television! [Premiere of the week] “The English”Friday, Nov. 11, Prime Video Photo: Prime Video This limited series, a co-production between the BBC and Amazon, is built around an intriguing premise: Emily Blunt plays a British woman who arrives in the woolly West in 1890. She’s looking for revenge, to hunt down the man who she feels is responsible for the death of her son. She teams up with a Pawnee scout and former cavalryman, played by Chaske Spencer. Based on the trailer for “The English,” you can expect lots of quippy dialogue and hardcore violence and a truly awe-inspiring amount of Emily Blunt charm. Part of what makes “The English” (created and written by British actor and writer Hugo Black) so fun is that it has flown under the radar and now we have a cool new Western show, full of terrific actors (the cast also includes Rafe Spall, Stephen Rea, Toby Jones and Ciaran Hinds), that we can all enjoy, with a cold sarsaparilla. How great is that? [[TRAILER](] ID=167008;size=300x250;setID=492280;uid={EMAIL}7166696; [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “Atlanta”Thursday, Nov. 10 at 10 p.m., FX Photo: FX Ready to say goodbye to “Atlanta”? The groundbreaking series, created by and starring Donald Glover, debuted back in 2016. Since then, virtually every cast member (including Brian Tyree Henry, Lakeith Stanfield and Zazie Beetz) has become a huge star, with Glover himself appearing in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (thanks to “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and as a younger version of Lando in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” a movie that his performance alone elevated significantly. (Fun fact: He had Disney bring the entire writers’ room of “Atlanta” to England so he could keep working on the show while filming “Solo.”) The series finale is once again written by Glover and directed by his constant collaborator Hiro Murai (who has directed a truly staggering number of “Atlanta” episodes, beginning with the first five episodes of the first season). The series is ostensibly about a small-time manager (Glover) and a rapper (Henry) attempting to navigate the industry, but it’s indulged in many subject matters and tangents. There’s no telling what the finale will bring. [[TRAILER](] [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “My Father’s Dragon”Friday, Nov. 11, Netflix [MY FATHER'S DRAGON CARTOON SALOON] Photo: Netflix A new film from Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon should be celebrated in the same way that a new Laika or Pixar movie is. “My Father’s Dragon,” based on the 1948 children’s novel by American author Ruth Stiles Gannett, was previously adapted into a Japanese animated film in the 1990s. The new version is directed by Nora Twomey, a co-founder of the studio and co-director of “The Secret of Kells,” which should already have you excited. The screenplay was written by Meg LeFauve, who wrote “Inside Out” and “The Good Dinosaur” for Pixar (she’s currently working on “Inside Out 2” for 2024). The film, which follows a young boy (Jacob Tremblay) who runs away from home and befriends a dragon (Gaten Matarazzo), features an all-star voice cast that also includes Whoopi Goldberg, Ian McShane, Rita Moreno, Chris O’Dowd, Judy Greer and Mary Kay Place. And the strikingly graphic visual sensibility approximates the original novel’s illustrations. Given Cartoon Saloon’s pedigree, this could also be a late entry in the Best Animated Feature Oscar race. Ready to chase some dragons? [[TRAILER](] [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “Spector”Sunday, Nov. 6 at 9 p.m., Showtime [Spector] Photo: Showtime This four-part documentary chronicles the life of Phil Spector, the genius music producer-turned-murderer (he was convicted of killing actress Lana Clarkson in his home in 2003). From his earliest beginnings to his unfortunate end (he died in prison in 2021 from complications due to COVID), Spector had been an outsize personality. And the documentary, which you can watch early on the Showtime app starting today, combines talking head interviews with colleagues, friends and commentators in an effort to give a full portrait of the man and the tragedy that ultimately ended up defining his life. When obituaries ran for his death in 2021, many outlets were criticized for downplaying Clarkson’s murder. This documentary looks like it won’t make the same mistake. [[TRAILER](] ID=167008;size=300x250;setID=492280;uid={EMAIL}7166696; [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “Wolfwalkers”Apple TV+ [Wolfwalkers] Photo: Apple TV+ Remember, just a minute ago, when we were talking about how special Cartoon Saloon is? Well why not watch their last feature before “My Father’s Dragon,” 2020’s outrageously wonderful “Wolfwalkers”? Directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart as the conclusion to the Irish studio’s Celtic folklore trilogy, this Oscar-nominated gem follows a young girl named Robyn, a hunter who encounters a girl named Mebh who has the power to transform into a wolf. It’s a beautiful story of acceptance and the magic of nature, and if you haven’t seen it you’ll get swept up – and swept away. [[WATCH](] [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “The Crown”Wednesday, Nov. 9, Netflix“The Crown” is back. And it seems like, with fictionalized projects like “Spencer” and the real-life death of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, that our collective appetite for stories about the monarchy could not be bigger. This, the fifth season of the celebrated show, takes place in the 1990s, which gives it even more of a nostalgic kick. Imelda Staunton plays Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth Debicki is Diana and Dominic West is Charles. Once again, all episodes are written by the series’ creator Peter Morgan. This season will undoubtedly become a sensation. [[TRAILER](] “Zootopia+”Wednesday, Nov. 9, Disney+Ready to go back to Zootopia? “Zootopia+” is a series of short films set in the world established by the 2016 Disney animated feature (which ultimately won the Best Animated Feature Oscar). Each installment will follow a different character from the mammalian paradise, with each also taking on a different genre or format. Expect lots of furry kookiness. [[WATCH](] “The Calling”Thursday, Nov. 10, PeacockDavid E. Kelley’s latest based-on-a-popular-novel mystery arrives on Peacock. This new series centers on an NYPD detective named Avraham Avraham (Jeff Wilbusch) who believes that his spiritual devotion gives him an edge while solving crimes. Of course, he soon embarks on a case that challenges everything he knows. Barry Levinson, the director of “Rain Man” who has pivoted to television with a series of popular TV movies (like “The Survivor”), directs several episodes of “The Calling,” including the premiere. Intriguing! [[TRAILER](] “Is That Black Enough for You?!?”Friday, November 11, NetflixElvis Mitchell, the entertaining and insightful former New York Times critic and current host and professor, wrote and directed this examination of Black culture in film, zeroing in specifically on the explosion of Black cinema during the 1970s. The trailer teases interviews with Samuel L. Jackson, Billy Dee Williams, Laurence Fishburne and Whoopi Goldberg. For film fanatics and those interested in the history of the art form, this is going to be essential. Cannot wait. [[TRAILER](] “Mammals”Friday, November 11, Prime VideoHow’s this for irony? James Corden plays a chef (!) in this new drama series from celebrated playwright and screenwriter Jez Butterworth. Of course, he goes through an existential crisis but probably comes out better for it on the other end. Maybe he found some empathy while during research for his portrayal? Sally Hawkins, Melia Kreilling and Colin Morgan also star. [[TRAILER](] [- - -] That does it for this week’s edition of The Wrap’s Summer TV Watch List.
