Fall TV Watch List: Ready to open Guillermo del Toro's 'Cabinet of Curiosities'? No images? [Click here](
[- - -] [TheWrap - SUMMER TV WATCH LIST] Week of October 22 – 28 Itâs the last week before Halloween and the streamers are throwing everything they can to fill up your trick-or-treat bag one last time, from a Guillermo del Toro-led anthology series, to a spooky stop-motion animated feature from âNightmare Before Christmasâ director Henry Selick to a Blumhouse movie and a based-on-a-true-story serial killer story. Whether these are tricks or treats remains to be seen. (And for the fraidy cats, thereâs a new adaptation of âAll Quiet on the Western Front,â a new season of âBig Mouthâ and the finale of âHouse of the Dragon.â) On with the television! [Premiere of the week]
âGuillermo del Toroâs Cabinet of CuriositiesâTuesday, October 25, Netflix [Hannah Galway in âThe Murmuringâ episode of Guillermo del Toro's ] Photo: Netflix Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning director behind âPacific Rimâ and âThe Shape of Water,” hosts this new anthology series in the spirit of âThe Twilight Zoneâ or âNight Gallery.” The director is seen in his cabinet of curiosities, removing an object that pertains to that story and providing a little background. (The series is named, in part, for his 2013 book that collects sketches from his notebooks.) New episodes drop over the course of four days, with two episodes each day, and del Toro has assembled a truly impressive slate of filmmakers for each installment: Guillermo Navarro, Vincenzo Natali, Ana Lily Amirpour, David Prior, Keith Thomas, Catherine Hardwicke, Jennifer Kent and Panos Cosmatos. Together, they’ve made some of the best horror movies of the modern era, including (but not limited to) âMandy,â âSplice,â âA Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,â âThe Babadookâ and âThe Empty Man.â [[TRAILER](]

âHouse of the DragonâSunday, October 23 at 9 p.m., HBO Photo: HBO âHouse of the Dragon,â we hardly knew ye! Even though the show has gone through several time jumps and more than one major death, it still felt like this excellent âGame of Thronesâ prequel, set a couple hundred years before the events of the main show, was just getting going. Last weekâs penultimate episode, while thrilling and very, very good, wasnât the huge barn-burner that the second-to-last episode usually is in the âGame of Thronesâ universe. Could that mean that this weekâs episode will be even bigger (and more shocking?) We cannot wait to find out how this song of ice and fire ends ⦠and what direction it points to the future. The dance of dragons has just begun! [[REVIEW](]

âWendell & WildâFriday, October 28, Netflix [Wendell & Wild] Photo: Netflix Henry Selick returns! The stop-motion animation master, who directed the beloved holiday favorite âThe Nightmare Before Christmas,â hasnât made a movie since 2009âs âCoraline.â Thankfully, heâs back with âWendell & Wild,â which is co-written, produced and co-stars Jordan Peele (alongside his comedy partner, Keegan Michael-Key). The pseudo-âBeetlejuiceâ tale follows a young girl (Lyric Ross) who faces her very literal demons (Key and Peele) — and Selick has promised that he wants to âscare, not scarâ kids who watch his movies. Perfect Halloween viewing option for the entire family. [[INTERVIEW](]

âA Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue ShootingâWednesday, October 26 at 9 p.m., HBO [Tree of Life] Photo: HBO In 2018, a gunman opened fire inside a Pittsburgh synagogue, killing 11 people as they prayed. The attack would be the most violent anti-Semitic attack in American history. This new documentary promises âa deeply personal portrait of the survivors, victims and family members, who share their harrowing first-hand accounts of the impact of the shooting on the community.” Executive produced by Michael Keaton, the documentary includes new interviews with key figures from the tragedy. âBatman: The Animated SeriesâHBO Max Image: Warner Bros. Now that DC has a new superhero (or is it antihero?) in theaters with “Black Adam,” it’s time to revisit perhaps the greatest iteration of DCâs greatest character, in âBatman: The Animated Series.â The show debuted back in 1992, on the heels of Tim Burtonâs two live-action blockbusters, and sought to embrace the darkness and mystery of those productions (also a fair amount of its retro-futuristic design aesthetics). Developed by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian, the Warner Bros.-produced show served as the linchpin of Foxâs attempt to dethrone Disney from its highly lucrative syndicated programming block, the Disney Afternoon. The bold backgrounds for âBatman: The Animated Seriesâ were airbrushed onto black paper and the character designs had a snappy graphic sensibility. The show, with too many classic episodes to name, is a treat to revisit. Also: it looks great in HD. [[WATCH](]
[- - -] [Premiere of the week] âThe Good NurseâWednesday, October 26, NetflixThis based-on-a-true-story thriller stars Jessica Chastain as Amy Loughren, a young nurse working alongside Eddie Redmayneâs Charlie Cullen. When a number of suspicious deaths are reported at their hospital, Amy starts to suspect Charlie as the culprit. (The real-life Cullen was convicted of killing over a dozen patients — though some suspect his death count could be closer to 400, making him the most prolific serial killer in recorded history.) Danish filmmaker Tobias Lindholm directs from a script by Krysty Wilson-Cairns (â1917,â âLast Night in Sohoâ). Reviews have been strong since the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Ready to get creeped out? [[REVIEW](] âTales of the JediâWednesday, October 26, Disney+In this new animated âStar Warsâ anthology show, created and mostly written by Dave Filoni (âStar Wars: The Clone Wars,â âStar Wars: Rebelsâ), we follow the early lives of Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) and Count Dooku (Corey Burton) on their parallel paths. The animation looks to have evolved from the earlier incarnation, and the episodes run between 13 and 17 minutes, making them longer than a typical short but not exactly full-length TV installments. We canât wait to learn more about these two fan-favorite characters. [[TRAILER](] âAll Quiet on the Western FrontâFriday, October 28, NetflixYes, itâs time for another adaptation of Erich Maria Remarqueâs 1929 antiwar classic — whose first filmed version was a 1930 Oscar winner for Best Picture. Edward Berger, whom American audiences will know from his work on TV series âYour Honor,â âPatrick Melroseâ and âThe Terror,â directed and co-wrote the film, which is Germanyâs submission for this yearâs Best International Feature Film. The story centers around a young German soldier (played by Felix Kammerer) who lies about his age so he can enlist in the German army in WWI — but soon grows disillusioned after getting into the trenches. [[TRAILER](] âBig MouthâFriday, October 28, NetflixNetflixâs flagship adult animated series returns for its sixth season (!) and its first since the debut of its spinoff, âHuman Resources,â debuted earlier this year. âBig Mouth,â loosely based on the childhood lives of creators created by Andrew Goldberg, Nick Kroll, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, is dependably hilarious â and dependably awkward. Get ready to squirm! [[TRAILER](] âRun Sweetheart RunâFriday, October 28, Prime VideoThis Jason Blum-produced horror thriller has languished since its splashy premiere at the Sundance Film Festival back in January 2020 and acquisition by Amazon a few months later (thatâs right, itâs from the before times). Directed and co-written by Shana Feste, it chronicles a young single mom (Ella Balinska) goes on a blind date from hell with a mysterious stranger (Pilou Asbæk). [[TRAILER](] [- - -] That does it for this weekâs edition of The Wrapâs Summer TV Watch List.
