Summer TV Watch List: Spend 'Five Days at Memorial' or Maybe Play 'Password' With Keke Palmer No images? [Click here]( ID=167008;size=700x180;setID=556351;uid={EMAIL}5846107;click=summer_tv_watchlist_top [- - -] [TheWrap - SUMMER TV WATCH LIST] Week of August 6 – 12 This week on the small screen there really is something for everyone, from more dramatic, based-on-a-true-story dramas like “Five Days at Memorial” to lighthearted romps like the “I Am Groot” shorts on Disney+ or family superhero film “Secret Headquarters” on Paramount+. There’s also Jamie Foxx killing vampires, Keke Palmer hosting game shows and a remake of “A League of Their Own.” See, something for everybody! On with the television! [Premiere of the week] “Five Days at Memorial”Friday, August 12, Apple TV+ [Vera Farmiga in ] Source: Apple TV+ Back in 2017, Ryan Murphy teamed up with Scott Rudin to turn an adaptation of Sheri Fink’s “Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital,” into the third season of his based-on-real-life anthology series “American Crime Story.” Murphy started casting; regular collaborator Sarah Paulson would play Dr. Anna Pou, while he would expand the story and cast Dennis Quaid as George W. Bush, Matthew Broderick as FEMA director Michael Brown and Annette Bening as Louisiana governor Kathleen Blanco. Ultimately, “American Crime Story: Katrina” was scrapped and never happened, but “Five Days at Memorial” lives on, this time in a limited series from “12 Years a Slave” screenwriter John Ridley and “Lost” executive producer Carlton Cuse. Pou is played by Vera Farmiga and the larger scope of Murphy’s iteration has been whittled down to the events unfolding in the hospital over the five days after Katrina made landfall. Other cast members include Cherry Jones, Adepero Oduye and Julie Ann Emery. It looks very intense but also totally vital and will undoubtedly benefit from Apple TV+’s weekly rollout. It’s impossible to even allude to anything without it feeling like a spoiler. Instead we’ll just say that some major plotlines from this season (which, in the broadest sense, was about a race to colonize Mars) are being resolved while new plotlines are being introduced (these will undoubtedly be explored in the show’s upcoming fourth season). You can, at the very least, expect another last-minute tease of next season (once again jumping into the future). Old-age make-up has really made some advancements! You can also consider this, once again, a rallying cry if you haven’t watched “For All Mankind” yet. It’s the best show on television! And it’s never too late to catch up! [[INTERVIEW](] [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “Day Shift”Friday, August 12, Netflix [DAY SHIFT Jamie Foxx Snoop Dogg] Source: Netflix Who doesn’t want to see Jamie Foxx as a freelance vampire hunter wheeling around the San Fernando Valley, killing creatures of the night (during the day)? Exactly. “Day Shift,” directed by J.J. Perry and produced by the same team behind “John Wick” and “Atomic Blonde,” also features Meagan Goode, Dave Franco (as Foxx’s straightlaced partner), Snoop Dogg and Karla Souza as an evil real estate developer who has big plans for the valley. A throwback to super violent buddy movies from the 1980s, “Day Shift” is a ton of occasionally spooky fun. [[TRAILER](] [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “Children of the Underground”Friday, August 12 at 8 p.m., FX [Children of the Underground] Source: FX This five-part documentary series, executive produced by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director of “Blackfish,” explores the true story of Faye Yager, “who built a vast underground network that hid hundreds of mothers and children, saving them from the alleged abuse of husbands and fathers when a broken court system would not” (according to the official description). But when she helped the ex-wife and children of a wealthy businessman, she had a very public reckoning. This looks like it could be your next true crime obsession. [[TRAILER](] [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “The Right Stuff”Disney+ [Right Stuff] Source: Disney+ If the end of “For All Mankind” has you craving more historical space adventures, you should definitely check out the Disney+/National Geographic version of “The Right Stuff.” Based once again on the 1979 Tom Wolfe nonfiction classic, this new adaptation was weirdly overlooked, despite handsome production values, a terrific cast and a tone that could have elevated the Disney+ audience into something more mature and adult. (This show is definitely reminiscent of “Mad Men.”) Sadly it only lasted for a single 8-episode season. Savor the episodes. This is a good one. [[WATCH](] [- - -] [Premiere of the week] “Password”Tuesday, August 9 at 10 p.m., NBCOne of the greatest, most popular American game shows of all time returns. And this time it’s being hosted by Keke Palmer! The show, which started back in 1961 and inspired spin-offs like “Password Plus,” “Super Password” (a 1980s staple) and “Million Dollar Password,” returns to its roots. This new version of the show is executive produced by Jimmy Fallon, who knows his way around a game. [[TRAILER](] “I Am Groot”Wednesday, August 10, Disney+This charming series of short films follows everyone’s favorite Marvel Studios tree creature. “I Am Groot” checks in with the character throughout his life cycle (including when he was a little dancing twig from the end of the first “Guardians of the Galaxy”), with an animation style that is keeping with the movie version of the character. (The animation was done by Luma Pictures and the shorts were directed by Kirsten Lepore, who just supervised animation on “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.”) Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper even return to voice Groot and Rocket. [[TRAILER](] “A League of Their Own”Friday, August 12, Prime VideoIncredibly, this isn’t the first time that “A League of Their Own” has been adapted for television. The Tom Hanks/Geena Davis original was first translated to the small screen in 1993, with a number of the actors from the original film reprising their roles (including Jon Lovitz, Garry Marshall and Tracy Reiner). This new version is a completely fresh take, developed by “Broad City” alum Abbi Jacobson and “Mozart in the Jungle” executive producer Will Graham (Jacobson also stars). It co-stars Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Kelly McCormack and Nick Offerman (in the Hanks role). [[TRAILER](] “Secret Headquarters”Friday, August 12, Paramount+How about a big, blustery, brand-new Jerry Bruckheimer movie on Paramount+? In “Secret Headquarters” a son (Walker Scobell from “The Adam Project”) discovers that his goofy father (Owen Wilson) is actually a world-renowned, Iron Man-like superhero after uncovering his secret headquarters underneath the family house. That’s pretty good, even if the final product winds up being more “Sky High” than “Shang-Chi.” “Secret Headquarters” is co-written and directed by the team of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who last remixed the superhero genre with Netflix’s somewhat underrated “Project Power” and made two of the best installments in the “Paranormal Activity” franchise. This might end up being a secret success. [[TRAILER](] “This Fool”Friday, August 12, HuluInspired by the life and stand-up of co-creator (and star) Chris Estrada, “This Fool” (produced by Fred Armisen) follows Estrada as Julio, a 30-something loser who works at Hugs Not Thugs, a rehabilitation center for former gangbangers. This looks charming and culturally specific, set in South Los Angeles, and we can’t help but be excited by any show that co-stars Frankie Quinones, genuinely one of the funniest human beings currently living.
