[Learn more]( Keeping an eye on things Grant Clauser, senior editor I’ve always thought it significant that we refer to Wi-Fi cameras and home alarms as “security” systems rather than anti-crime or anti-bad-stuff-happening-to-you systems. Sure, the presence of security cameras may deter any would-be prowlers around my house, but mostly they just help defend against the deer that threaten to consume my garden. They let me rest a bit easier with the knowledge that if something were to happen, I can at least respond from a more informed perspective. As Francis Bacon said, knowledge is power, and home security devices can give you a lot of knowledge about your home’s goings on when you’re not around. As in the time my daughter knew that our security system would alert me about any parties, but threw one anyway, assuming I wouldn’t actually check. Power held isn’t necessarily power wielded, but I grounded her anyway. At other moments, security devices can provide an alibi for the defenseless, such as the time we had several pet-owning family members over to visit, and one of the dogs was leaving unwelcome gifts on the floor when no one was around to watch. All of the dogs pleaded innocence, but camera footage caught the offender—rear leg raised in the act. My father was embarrassed for his pup, but at least my own dog, Rufus, was vindicated. Hopefully I’ll never need my security camera for anything more serious than a scolding or a family argument to settle, but in the meantime, I’m just happy to have the peace of mind to keep an eye on things while I’m away, worrying about every little thing.
