Also Inside: The True Cost of Lockdowns Thursday, June 29, 2023  Happy Thursday, {NAME}!  On this day in 1767, the British Parliament passed the Townshend Revenue Act, a defining moment in the history of American taxation. Named after Chancellor of the Exchequer Charles Townshend, this act imposed duties on a range of imported goods, including glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. These taxes were levied on the American colonies to finance the administration of the territories and pay the salaries of colonial governors and judges, intending to maintain British control over the colonies.  The passage of the Townshend Acts was met with widespread resistance in the colonies, as many colonists believed they were being unfairly taxed without their consent, encapsulated in the phrase "no taxation without representation." These taxes contributed to growing anti-British sentiment, which eventually led to the American Revolution and the United States' subsequent independence.  Fast forward to June 29th, 2023, and the conversation around taxation is just as lively. Today, American citizens are subject to a progressive tax system, which means tax rates increase with income. The current rates range from 10% for the lowest earners to 37% for the highest. Much like in the days of the Townshend Acts, debates about taxation in America remain contentious. Is an "income tax" on American citizens even constitutional? That's a subject for another email. [wink]  The implementation of the Townshend Revenue Act and its legacy reminds us of the importance of a fair and just tax system. It highlights the need for citizens to have a voice in how they are taxed and how these funds are used, principles that remain at the heart of American democracy. As we reflect on the current state of taxation in America, let's remember the lessons of the past and strive for a system that truly serves the needs and interests of all Americans.  With that lesson in mind, let’s take a look at how government intervention (or lack thereof) has cost Americans dearly. From lies about the harmful chemicals on our crops to the staggering cost of COVID lockdowns, we’ve got everything you need to know. Let’s dive in…  Bayer Fined $6.9 Million for Glyphosate Lies  The conglomerate Bayer and Monsanto, having merged in a $63 billion deal in 2018, are now once again in the limelight. The two have been fined $6.9 million for violating an agreement they made with the New York state government to cease making misleading claims about the safety of their glyphosate-based herbicides.  The Roundup controversy has a history spanning several decades. Monsanto introduced the herbicide Roundup in the mid-1970s and it quickly became the most widely used herbicide globally. Glyphosate, its active ingredient, kills weeds by inhibiting a critical plant enzyme.  However, the safety of glyphosate has been hotly debated, with studies linking it to a wide array of adverse effects on pollinators, laboratory animals, and humans. A groundbreaking study in March connected Roundup to liver and metabolic diseases in children, highlighting potential risks for human health.  >> [Massive Glyphosate Fine]( <<   Lockdowns Cost Heart Attack Patients Years of Life  The widespread implementation of COVID-19 lockdowns had a host of unintended consequences, one of which was a reduction in the life expectancy of heart attack patients, according to a new study published in the European Heart Journal — Quality of Care & Clinical Outcomes. The study, conducted by an international team of researchers using data from the U.K. and Spain, revealed that one month of lockdown may have cut up to two years off the life expectancy of these patients. The researchers utilized statistical modeling to estimate that the lack of medical care provided to heart attack patients likely reduced their life expectancy by an average of 18 months in the U.K. and two years in Spain compared to pre-lockdown patients. This startling revelation raises the question, as posited by Brand, "If people suffering from genuine life-threatening illnesses were not getting the care they needed, what was the point of lockdown?" Allegations of censorship aren't baseless. The Telegraph reported that a covert U.K. government unit collaborated with social media companies to suppress discussions of controversial lockdown policies during the pandemic. Similarly, the "Twitter Files" have pointed to collaboration between the U.S. government and social media companies. >> [The True Cost of Lockdowns]( <<   Air Pollution?
