(some facts about this holiday) {NAME}, Memorial Day is much more than just a chance to have a BBQ, play some Frisbee, and watch some baseball. It’s a time to remember the men and women who sacrificed their lives for their country. It’s a time to remember the fallen heroes.          Until 1967, it was known as “Decoration Day” for the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. The holiday was a response to the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War, in which a total of some 620,000 soldiers died.   No less than 25 places have been named in connection with the origin of Memorial Day, and states observed the holiday on different dates. The Ironton-Lawrence Memorial Day Parade in Ironton, Ohio, is recognized as the oldest continuously running Memorial Day parade in the nation, beginning all the way back in 1868. However, the oldest (and first) Memorial Day parade in the country was held a year earlier in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.  In 1971, Memorial Day became a national holiday by an act of Congress; it is now celebrated annually on the last Monday in May. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day is celebrated in late May because that's when flowers are likely to be blooming across the country. Memorial Day tends to mark the unofficial start of summer for many Americans (though the season really begins with the Summer Solstice in June).  If you know any “Gold Star families” (families who have lost a loved one in military service), be sure to let them know how much you appreciate them today. You can also fly the American flag, leave flowers on the grave of a deceased military member, and/or visit a military monument.  Take time today to count your blessings and to be thankful for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.  Blessings,  P.S. Here is a moving [rendition of TAPS](, which honors the men and women who have laid down their lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of freedom.      © Copyright 2021, TTAC Publishing LLC.
