The purpose of a market is to sell. So, when we see opportunities emerge around market momentum and insider buying… we take advantage of them. Right now, insider buying to selling is at the weakest level that we’ve seen in a month. The blue line is the five-day moving average of buying to selling in dollar amounts. As you can see, executives aren’t buying much at this point. [] Yes, there are a handful of legacy trades that we can take advantage of in current conditions. Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) just bought another $312 million in Occidental Petroleum (OXY) stock. But we don’t force anything in this environment. With the Federal Reserve prepared to release the minutes from its December meeting next Wednesday, there could be some challenges on the horizon. And once again, when insider buying is weak, it can act as a signal of a short-term market top. That said, we just walked away today with another big gain by trading around the insiders. Let me break down this trade — and how you can take advantage of one of the best strategies in the market. Momentum with insider buying activity. Viva Delta Air Lines On Oct. 31, I received an email at 4:30 p.m. It informed me that a company director at Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE: DAL) had purchased $307,500 in stock with his own money. David Taylor bought 10,000 shares, according to a Form 4 document filed with the Securities Exchange Commission. When executives buy stock with their own money, it’s a sign of confidence in the company's future. Taylor didn’t just buy stock one time in October. He had also picked up another $330,900 in shares on Oct. 18. Taylor has been buying stock all year. He bought shares in April three times, plunking down nearly $1 million of his own cash on the stock. Now — if you’ll recall — October was a brutal month for the markets. A huge bond sell-off rattled Wall Street, pushing the 10-year bond to roughly 5% and setting the stage for a huge sell-off that drove the S&P 500 into oversold territory. Since then, the market has been on a remarkable run. And instead of speculating around Delta stock — or other insider actions — we took advantage of what the market was giving us. We sold put spreads on Delta at a level below where Taylor bought shares, and combined this with our Equity Strength Signals to ensure that we were trading when conditions were positive. Since October, Delta is up more than 20%. But we took advantage by targeting a trade with an 80% probability of profit and a targeted return of 18.3%. We sold a put at the $33 level, and bought the $31 put that expired today, Dec. 29. We put down $169 in margin to earn $31 — or 18.3%. The result? We pocketed those gains today. So, a $10,000 trade — with a focus on high probability — could have generated more than $1,800 in profit. For the record, this strategy is 11-2 in 13 closed trades with a win rate of 85%, and an average return of 10.43% including the winners and losers. That’s an annualized return of 542.25%! This is a VERY powerful strategy — and it’s designed with risk management in mind. We currently have five other trades open right now, and all of them are in the green. We plan to add another trade once insider buying picks up again. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, and I’m looking forward to actively trading in 2024.
