Apple released details Tuesday on its long-awaited next-generation devices. The Wanderlust event featured new gadgets that included the iPhone 15, the new iWatch and more. The market responded with a bit of a lackluster shrug... It’s not that Apple isn’t an innovative company. We are facing a market with broader economic concerns, dragging liquidity figures, and negative momentum. That said, Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) is one of the most important stocks in U.S. equity markets. Today, I want to outline Apple’s relevance to investors, and explain why I live by the mantra “So goes Apple, so goes the U.S. equity markets.” So Goes Apple… It doesn’t take much analysis to accept this premise. Let’s look at the key reasons. No. 1: Market Weight Apple's immense market cap influences major indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, impacting their overall performance. The company’s total market capitalization as a global tech giant sits north of $2.8 trillion. The market capitalization is larger than the gross domestic product of entire countries. Apple comprises more than 10.8% of the weight on the Nasdaq 100 (tracked by the QQQ ETF), and about 7.6% of the S&P 500. And it’s a big component of the Dow Jones. The sheer size of this company means that as it moves up and down, it will boost or drag the markets. No. 2: Tech Representation Apple is a significant component of the Information Technology sector (XLK), driving investor sentiment and market trends. Years ago, the markets centered heavily around U.S. manufacturing, financial organizations and industrials. But that isn’t a good representation of the U.S. economy — or the global economy anymore. Technology is the driver and connector of the global economy. Apple’s technology sets the standard for many other aspiring organizations in the space. No. 3: Global Reach The world is global, and Apple is the embodiment of a global brand with billions of customers. Its international presence connects U.S. markets to the global economy. This is absolutely critical because it helps expand global credit, cross-border capital movements, and relationships between businesses across the world. Apple’s global supply chain is also critical, because it pushes relationships between governments, trade groups, and partners that otherwise might not engage each other. Apple represents the scale of the U.S. markets. The ability to go from 360 million customers (the U.S. population) to the potential upside of billions showcases the immense reach of one organization, and the potential for many others. No. 4: Innovation In the Tech sector, the name of the game is innovation — particularly on the Business to Consumer (B2C) side of the world. Consumers love gadgets and functionality. And constant innovation is a critical element of successful tech companies. Today’s event is another showcasing how Apple reinvents the iPhone and other devices with each iteration. Apple's product launches and innovations set benchmarks for other tech companies, fueling competition and growth. There are various improvements and new functions that might seem trivial. But there is dramatic innovation inside the devices, such as increases in memory and GPS. The technology in a standard iPhone is more powerful than all of the technology that put a Man on the Moon in the 1960s. No. 5: Innovation Driver Now, there’s one more critical element to discuss... Institutional involvement. Just among ETFs alone, there are 338 that hold Apple.
The stock is the largest — by far — holding of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Class A (NYSE: BRK.A). Institutions are crowded like mad into this name. This could be because of a herd mentality… But it can also be linked to institutions not trying to deliver 20% to 30% gains a year. They are just trying to beat their benchmark, which is usually the S&P 500 ETF (SPY), but might just be another ETF or fund that has similar attributes to their holdings or specialty. Here’s the kicker... Because institutions are simply trying to beat or approach their benchmark, they end up owning many of the same assets as their target. Would you be shocked to know that Apple is widely held in all of these target funds? The reality is that Apple stock’s performance is a barometer for broader market sentiment and stability. And that’s why it’s so widely owned. [] Chat soon, Garrett {NAME} *This is for informational and educational purposes only. There is an inherent risk in trading, so trade at your own risk. This new way to “flip” some of Wall Street’s BIGGEST transactions into what could be extra cash is all thanks to a phenomenon happening all across Wall Street… You see, early last year, there was a monumental shift in the markets… One that made it nearly impossible for the average Joe to have any sort of edge… But this shift opened up a new door for regular folks to grab their slice of the millions, sometimes even billions of dollars going into specific stocks each day.
