For weeks, it was assumed the 74-year-old had been taken hostage by Hamas. But on Monday, the Consulate General of Israel in Toronto confirmed she had been killed by the militant group. - More: “I have to hope that the life she lived and what she worked for will sow the seeds of peace,” friend Lynne Mitchell said. “And that somehow it will come around as part of her legacy and as part of who she was — that it is achievable.”

Rick Madonik/The Star health care [A Toronto doctor who sexually abused patients will keep his license after a third suspension]( In 2016, Dr. Javad Peirovy was suspended for six months after he sexually abused four female patients. In 2019, he was also suspended for two months for giving his personal cell number to a young female patient whom he then dated. This September, he was again suspended for seven months for failing to abide by the conditions on his license, including that he not see female patients without a chaperone approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Jacques Gallant reports. [Why hasn’t his license been revoked?](
- More: “Your now extensive disciplinary record, involving multiple types of misconduct, greatly harms the reputation of this profession and the public’s trust,” panel member Dr. Roy Kirkpatrick said Friday morning.
- Wait, what? “Isn’t it three strikes and you’re out?” said medical malpractice lawyer Paul Harte, who is not involved with the case. “The college needs to essentially do everything in their power to have the public protected, and in this case, revocation appears to be the only way that they can genuinely ensure that.”
Andrew Francis Wallace/The Star cost of living [One in 10 Torontonians is relying on food banks]( According to the Daily Bread Food Bank’s annual report, Torontonians’ use of food banks doubled in April 2022-23 compared to the year before. What’s more frightening to CEO Neil Heatherington is that the rising figures came at a time of relatively low unemployment, Alyshah Hasham reports. Almost half the food bank’s clients live in households where at least one person is employed and about 60 per cent have post-secondary education. [Here’s what else we know about the people relying on food banks to put food on their table](.
- By the numbers: In 2021, the network of 79 food banks across Toronto passed one million visits in a year for the first time. By the end of this year, they expect to exceed three million, Heatherington said.
