Andrew Francis Wallace/The Star courts [A gun case collapsed due to GTA officers muting their body cameras]( This past spring, a Toronto judge tossed an impaired driving charge because police muted their body-worn-cameras during the 2021 arrest. Now, a gun case in Oshawa has fallen apart after Durhman police testified about doing the same thing in 2022, Betsy Powell reports. [Here’s what we know about the cases](.
- Context: [Cases ranging from gun charges to attempted murder have collapsed in recent months over Ontario police conduct](. Reasons have included slow disclosure of evidence, racial profiling, an unwarranted no-knock raid and more.
- More: “In my view, the court must disassociate itself from this conduct in the strongest terms, to make clear its disapproval of this conduct in the course of a police investigation,” a Toronto judge wrote about the 2021 arrest.
Steve Russell/The Star climate crisis [Temperatures have soared to 40 C in a downtown daycare this summer]( For the second summer in a row, a city-run community centre with a daycare in St. Lawrence has been forced to close during heat waves, Kelly Skjerven writes. This July, it shuttered for four days, putting some parents in the mixed-income neighbourhood in a tough spot. [With a permanent fix still two years away, parents are just having to make-do in the face of extreme heat](.
- More: “(The daycare is) doing everything they can and it feels like we’re just being ignored,” mother Stacey Rodas said. “I’m not trying to villainize the city, I want to work with them.”
- Word from the city: In a statement to the Star, Toronto’s parks, forestry and recreation department said portable air conditioning units were installed in the daycare along with other fans. However, a local councillor’s office told a parent that a permanent fix likely wouldn’t come this summer or next.
- Why it matters: Step aside, global warming. The UN is warning of “global boiling.” [Here’s what extreme heat does to your body](.
Alex Brandon/AP Photo United States [Donald Trump has been indicted over 2020 election meddling]( Prosecutors in Georgia have used a statute typically associated with mobsters to charge Trump and 18 allies with scheming to overturn his election loss in the battleground state in 2020 — highlighting ongoing attempts to hold the former president accountable for working to undermine American democracy, The Associated Press reports. A 97-page indictment details dozens of actions to undo Trump’s electoral defeat. [Here’s how the case could affect his bid for the White House](.
- More: The indictment describes Trump, his attorney, a former White House chief of staff and a former mayor of New York as members of a “criminal organization” who were part of an “enterprise” that operated in Georgia and other states.
- Context: The Georgia indictment comes just two weeks after the Justice Department charged Trump in a wide conspiracy to overturn the election.
- Watch for: The defendants will be allowed to voluntarily surrender by noon Aug. 25, said Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who added she plans to ask for a trial date within six months.
