Kilcoo Camp/Instagram GTA [Lawsuits allege sex abuse and grooming at an Ontario summer camp]( The prestigious Kilcoo Camp and its now former director are facing two lawsuits alleging sexual assaults against two anonymous plaintiffs who attended the camp in the 1990s and 2000s, Betsy Powell reports. According to the lawsuits, David (Lub) Latimer, the camp’s director since 1985, sexually assaulted a preteen camper in the 1990s and a former staff member in 2009. [Here’s why they accuse him of “grooming and manipulating” them](.
- Word from Latimer: “The allegations suggesting that I harmed anyone associated with the camp or anywhere else are simply not true. I would never do anything to hurt any young person,” Latimer said in an emailed statement to the Star through his lawyer.
- Word from Kilcoo: The camp’s leadership wrote in an email to the Star that while both lawsuits name the camp as a defendant, “the allegations only involve the actions of the former director. They are extremely troubling.”
Richard Drew/AP file photo big tech [Meta has begun its news ban for Instagram and Facebook users in Canada]( “In order to comply with the Online News Act, we have begun the process of ending news availability in Canada,” Meta said in a statement Tuesday, adding that the changes that began yesterday would be fully implemented across Instagram and Facebook within the next few weeks. The move comes in response to the recently-passed law the Liberals framed as an effort to support a journalism industry it says has been hurt by tech giants dominating the digital advertising market, Raisa Patel reports. [Here’s how the ban will affect social media users](.
- Context: The Online News Act would compel tech giants such as Meta and Google — which share, repurpose and direct users to online news — to make deals with news publishers and face financial penalties if they don’t.
- More: Among other changes for users, Canadians on Instagram and Facebook will no longer be able to view and share news from any outlets outside of the country.
Jose Luis Magana/AP Photo UNITED STATES [Donald Trump has been charged for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election loss]( For two months after the November 2020 election, Donald Trump refused to accept his loss. His continuous lies that his victory was stolen from him incited the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot, which saw Trump loyalists violently break into the building, attack police and disrupt the congressional counting of electoral votes. Now, a Justice Department investigation on Trump’s efforts has led to an indictment, The Associated Press reports. [Here’s what you need to know](.
- Context: The charges come as Trump leads among Republicans to win the party’s presidential nomination. Despite the allegations that the former president attacked U.S. democracy, a conviction would not prevent him from vying for the White House or becoming president again.
- More: This is the third case in which Trump has been indicted. [Here’s where all the investigations on him stand](.
