Plus, Ontario to crackdown on “ghost jobs” and new information about Whitby crash victims. [The Star] First Up [By Manuela Vega] By Manuela Vega Good morning. Here’s the latest on the antiwar encampment at the University of Toronto, employers who give applicants false hope and the victims in the Whitby crash. DON’T MISS Steve Russell/Toronto Star GTA [A protest encampment has emerged at the University of Toronto — it’s allowed to stay for now]( Despite the university’s efforts to keep students from setting up encampments like those seen at campuses across the U.S. and Canada, protestors on Thursday bypassed fences and erected over 50 tents. U of T Occupy for Palestine, who is calling on the university to cut financial ties with Israel, as well as with academic institutions supportive of its war effort and weapons manufacturers, said they had exhausted “every form of protest.” The university originally gave them until 10 p.m. to leave, but said it would not clear the encampment if the atmosphere remained “peaceful.” It noted, however, that it is growing increasingly concerned. [Here’s how the day of protest unfolded]( - The latest: Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 34,500 people in the Gaza Strip, according to local officials, following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that Israeli officials say killed about 1,200 people.[A hostage, abducted along some 250 others on Oct. 7, has died amid negotiations for a cease-fire deal](. - Meanwhile: Nearly 2,200 people have been arrested during pro-Palestinian protests on U.S. college campuses. [Police have sometimes used riot gear, tactical vehicles and flash-bang devices to clear encampments and buildings](. Chris Young/The Canadian Press Star exclusive [Frustrated by “ghost jobs?” Ontario will crack down on employers who leave applicants with false hope]( New legislation to be announced by Labour Minister David Piccini today will force larger companies to disclose in help wanted ads whether a position actually exists and needs to be filled, or if the posting is to find candidates for future openings, Kristin Rushowy reports. It was a story by First Up’s Kevin Jiang that inspired the new legislation, which will also require employers to respond to job applicants they’ve interviewed — a first in Canada.  [Here’s why the Ford government felt compelled to make a change](. - ICYMI: [Can’t find work despite the so-called labour shortage? You might be applying for “ghost jobs,”]( Kevin writes. - By the numbers: A survey of more than 1,000 American managers late last year found 43 per cent admitted to posting “ghost jobs.” While 37 per cent said they did it to keep a pool of candidates in case a job became vacant, others said it was to “placate overworked employees.” Colin Williamson Policing [The parents of the baby who died in the Whitby crash were in the same vehicle]( New details are emerging as Ontario’s civilian police watchdog investigates the catastrophic collision on Monday night that followed a high-speed police chase in the wrong direction of Highway 401, Wendy Gillis, Jennifer Pagliaro and Kevin Jiang report. A 33-year-old father and 27-year-old mother were in the same vehicle where their three-month-old baby boy and his grandparents died in the crash, but they are expected to survive. The driver of the U-Haul police had been chasing was 21 years old. [Here’s what else we know about the victims and the police involved](. - More: At least six vehicles were part of the crash. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) revealed they have identified two subject officers and four witness officers for their investigation. A subject officer is someone who, “may have” caused death or injury in the opinion of the SIU director. - ICYMI: According to an internal report obtained by the Star, [a Durham police supervisor had called off the pursuit, but officers continued the chase](. WHAT ELSE [Canada’s greenhouse emissions rose for a second straight year]( — the Trudeau government is blaming post-pandemic recovery.
