The GOP’s latest attack on voting rights is clearly a racist tactic rooted in Jim Crow era voter suppression. In fact, Mississippi still has laws from Jim Crow in effect today. The Mississippi Supreme Court struck down the state’s ballot initiative process, invalidating a 2020 initiative to legalize medical marijuana and a major setback for the State’s effort to expand early voting and Medicare. This ballot initiative was voted on, and passed, by the citizens of Mississippi, but now their voice is silenced by this court decision.
