Up and Down The Story Americans under 55 are getting cancer at [higher rates](. Whatâs going on? Yesterday, the American Cancer Society revealed there's been a [rise in colorectal cancer]( cases. In the late '90s, colorectal cancer was the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women under 50. Now, itâs the first for men and second for women. Experts arenât sure whatâs causing the increase, but some have pointed to a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet. Meanwhile, researchers have also found a [rise in diagnoses]( for some common cancers. Between 2015-2019, researchers tracked about a 1% increase each year in uterine, breast, and pancreatic cancers. Any good news? Yes, actually. People with cancer are living longer and [dying less often](. Thatâs due in part to better treatments and earlier detection. The five-year survival rate for all cancers combined has gone up about 20% since the â70s. Still, experts say the rise in cancer diagnoses highlights the need for things like earlier screenings. For colon and rectal cancers, doctors [recommend]( screens at age 45 â down from the previous rec at 50. In some cases where colorectal cancer is present in family history, doctors recommend getting screened as early as age 40. theSkimm The American Cancer Society projects there will be 2 million new cases of cancer in the US this year â which comes out to more than 5,000 diagnoses per day. Now, amid the rise in cancer cases among younger adults, many point to the need for new investments in prevention efforts.
