Tell me. Over the weekend, the FDA signed off on zuranolone — a once-a-day medication for postpartum depression taken over two weeks. It's the first-ever at-home treatment for a disease that affects about one in seven moms. In 2019, the FDA approved the treatment to be given through IV at hospitals. The DEA will need to clear the medication within 90 days before it can be made available for use at home with a doctor's prescription. How does it work? The drug involves administering a steroid that mimics the hormone progesterone, which can suddenly drop after birth. In trials, most women taking the pill saw a 50% or higher improvement in symptoms within a span of days. Still there are concerns: like how it will impact breastfeeding moms or barriers to access. The companies behind the drug haven’t yet named the price. theSkimm An estimated 500,000 US women each year suffer from postpartum depression, which can account for up to 20% of postpartum deaths. This drug by itself will not solve the maternal health crisis in the US — but it may bring much-needed relief for some women experiencing the most acute symptoms.
