[View it in your browser.]( [SHARE THIS]( [SHARE THIS]( Skimm for March 10th Skimm’d while dipping pretzels in [spiked fondue]( QUOTE OF THE DAY “Not staged” - [A Florida lawyer,]( whose suit caught fire in court when E-cig batteries in his pocket overheated. He was defending someone accused of arson. Lawyer lawyer pants on fire. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( [Insta This]( JUST IMPEACHY THE STORY Last night, South Korea told its president she’s [out of a job](. WAIT…BACK UP. Last year, it came out that SK President Park Geun-hye was [helping her close friend]( with no role in government cheat major SK businesses ([like Samsung]( out of tens of millions of dollars. This was sometimes done in return for political favors. Park says ‘didn’t do it.’ But hundreds of thousands of protesters called for her to step down. In December, lawmakers [voted to impeach her.]( the country’s Constitutional Court said ‘yup, agree’ and officially sent Park packing in an unprecedented move. Cue even more mass protests — both for and against Park — and clashes with police that left two people dead. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? That Park doesn’t have political immunity anymore, so prosecutors can charge her with things like abuse of power. That the country has two months to pick a new prez. And that this comes at a really bad time. Earlier this week, North Korea’s launched [ballistic missile tests]( Japan. In response, the US is helping SK set up [a defense system]( can shoot down these kinds of missiles. And China - an NK ally - has been retaliating by doing things like [shutting down SK businesses]( the country. In other words, political upheaval is not what SK needs right now. theSKIMM Park was the country’s first female president. And now she’s the first one to lose the job. This scandal has rocked South Korea for months - and the country’s trust in its government has taken a hit. The next person will have their work cut out for them. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( REPEAT AFTER ME... WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO GOT DRAGGED INTO DOING A HALF-MARATHON… Find yourself a good pair of sneakers. Yesterday, the new GOP healthcare bill put on its running shoes and cleared two major hurdles in Congress. [It got the thumbs up from two House panels.]( this week, the GOP [revealed its version of a healthcare bill]( that would replace Obamacare. It includes capping federal dollars for Medicaid (the program that helps cover low income and disabled people), replacing gov subsidies that help pay for coverage with tax credits, and scrapping the part of Obamacare that requires people to have insurance or pay a fine. So far it’s been getting ‘meh’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and [major medical groups]( the plan could leave millions of Americans out in the cold. Some Republicans say the plan looks [too similar to Obamacare]( while others say the whole thing could cost too much. Cue the White House and GOP leaders playing defense. Yesterday, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) literally rolled up his sleeves and [pulled out a PowerPoint]( defend the new bill. And next week, President Trump will hold [rallies across the country]( to drum up support. The bill needs to get the OK from the House Budget Committee before it hits the House for a full vote later this month. So, the party’s just getting started. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO’S ON A PANEL AT [SXSW]( This might come up. Yesterday, WikiLeaks said it’ll do tech companies a solid and [share some of the info in the alleged CIA docs]( it got its hands on. Earlier this week, WikiLeaks posted what it says are thousands of spying docs that outline CIA hacking techniques. Like, being able to spy on people through their cell phones and smart TVs. The docs also say the CIA can bypass encryption - an extra layer of data protection - in certain apps by taking advantage of technical flaws in devices. But the site didn’t share the exact details that would let others ctrl + c the CIA’s tools. It’s unclear if these docs are legit or where they came from, but some gov officials and security experts said they look pretty real. The reveal raised serious questions in Silicon Valley about [user privacy](. So yesterday, Julian Assange - WikiLeaks founder and the UK’s Ecuadorean embassy couch surfer - said he’ll share details with them so they can fix the flaws in their products. This puts these tech companies in a pickle. Assange and WikiLeaks don’t have a trusty track record. See: that time WikiLeaks published all those Hillary Clinton campaign emails during the election, which US officials say were [from Russia.]( To trust or not to trust, that is the question. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND SAYS SHE GOT THREE NEW PIERCINGS... I’ll believe it when I see it. Yesterday, Scott Pruitt, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, said carbon dioxide is not a [“primary contributor”]( to global warming. Putting Pruitt at odds with his own agency. Years of research from the EPA - and NASA and NOAA - show that when cars and factories release CO2, Planet Earth starts getting hot under the collar. This isn’t the first time Pruitt’s disagreed with the agency he’s leading. In the past, [he’s sued the EPA]( multiple times. That’s led to worries that as the new HBIC of the agency, he won’t be so hands-on with climate change. That sound you hear is a whole bunch of scientists shaking their heads. [That’s so last decade.]( Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR COUSIN WHO’S APPLYING TO HARVARD LAW... At least you don’t need a [179 on the LSAT anymore.]( Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( SKIMM READS [“Exit West” by Mohsin Hamid]( About two people who are just starting to fall in love…while their country (that sounds a lot like Syria) is falling apart. They run away through a series of doors that help people escape. [This read’s]( like “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” but set in the real world.
