Is this email not displaying correctly? [View it in your browser.]( [SHARE THIS]( [SHARE THIS]( Skimm for February 28th Skimm’d over pancakes for dinner QUOTE OF THE DAY “Can help get you…into eye-of-the-tiger mode” - [The owner]( of a new pot-friendly gym, explaining his business model. Apparently there’s more than one way to get a runner’s high. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( [Insta This]( ON EDGE THE STORY Yesterday, Jewish community centers and schools in several states [received more bomb threats.]( WHAT’S GOING ON? This is the fifth time this year that multiple JCCs have been targeted with these kinds of threats. Authorities have not found any actual bombs. It comes a few days after dozens of headstones were knocked over at a [Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia, PA.]( A similar incident happened at a [Jewish cemetery in Missouri]( earlier this month. Meanwhile, last week, a gunman [opened fire on two Indian men]( at a Kansas bar. One of the men died. The gunman left the scene and later showed up at a Missouri restaurant, where he reportedly told the bartender that he’d shot [“two Iranian people.”]( WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING? Last week, President Trump said these threats show that there’s more work to do to [“root out hate.”]( Yesterday, Press Sec. Sean Spicer said Trump [“continues to condemn”]( anti-Semitism. Jewish leaders say they want to see [“swift and concerted action”]( from law enforcement and the White House. The FBI and the Justice Dept’s Civil Rights Division are looking into the threats. theSKIMM These latest incidents follow a [spike in hate crimes]( over the past year. While officials sort out the motives, many religious and immigrant communities are on edge. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( REPEAT AFTER ME... WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE CEO ASKS YOU TO LEAD A MEETING... Big moment. President Trump’s about to have one too. Tonight, [he’ll take the podium to deliver his first speech to Congress]( as president. It’s basically the State of the Union but isn’t called that for a newly-elected prez. He’ll lay out his top priorities, including how he thinks the [US gov should spend its cash money.]( That includes bumping military spending up by $54 billion to help with things like [“public safety and national security.”]( cutting spending from other federal agencies and programs to make it happen (like the EPA and US foreign aid). Trump will submit a budget to Congress next month to get the final sign-off. That’s when things could get tense. Trump’s plan doesn’t include cuts to Medicare and Social Security - the two exact gov programs GOP lawmakers,[including House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI)]( have wanted to put under the spending knife for years. So they’ll have to work out what gets the nip and tuck. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET TO WORK AND YOUR CO-WORKER’S DESK IS EMPTY… Hmmmmmm. Yesterday, [Uber’s engineering SVP Amit Singhal stepped down]( out, when he got the job he failed to disclose that he’d been accused of sexual harassment in the past. It reportedly happened in his last job at Google. Singhal’s exit comes about a week after former Uber engineer Susan Fowler wrote a [viral blog post]( why she left the company. She alleges they mishandled her complaints of sexual harassment by her male boss, among lots of other things. Uber’s PR team’s been under [juuuust a bit of pressure]( in recent weeks. So when this blog post happened the company said ‘we’re on it,’ and launched an internal investigation led by [former attorney general Eric Holder.]( Now, there’s Singhal’s resignation to add to the pile of things Uber has to answer for. It’s unclear if this had anything to do with Fowler’s departure. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU CONFRONT YOUR FRIEND WHO’S BEEN TALKING ABOUT YOU BEHIND YOUR BACK… Have something you want to share? Yesterday, it came out that a bunch of car companies allegedly [knew Takata’s air bags were dangerous]( for years…but used them anyway. Takata: the company that makes air bags for carmakers like Honda, Ford, and Nissan. Back in the [mid 2000s,]( the airbags started exploding and spraying shrapnel everywhere. Around a dozen people in the US have died as a result. Millions of cars were recalled in the [largest-ever car safety recall.]( Justice Department opened an investigation. And in 2015, US regulators slapped the company with a [$200 million fine.]( Now, it looks like at least four carmakers allegedly knew about the problem all along. Yesterday, lawyers representing victims of the faulty air bags said these car makers knew about the problem all along - and still used Takata air bags to save money. Also yesterday, in a separate case, [Takata said ‘guilty’]( to trying to cover up evidence of the faulty air bags. Now they have to cough up $1 billion in penalties. Bottom line: nobody’s looking good in all this. Skimm This[Like Us]( with Us]( WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO BINGES LEGAL DRAMAS... How about one IRL? Today, South Korean prosecutors said they’re going to [officially charge]( the Samsung heir and the company’s de-facto leader - Lee Jae-yong - with bribery. Yes, this has to do with South Korea’s [massive corruption scandal]( started last year. The one that got President Park Geun-hye[impeached.]( this month, prosecutors arrested Lee, saying he bribed Park’s close friend in order to get gov support for a big company merger. Samsung says ‘didn’t do it.’ Now prosecutors are saying ‘don’t believe you.’ And it looks like Lee’s headed for a trial. Think: the bouncer standing between you and that new house. NO EXCUSES: IMMIGRATION Welcome to 2017. Time to get informed on all things [immigration]( excuses. This week’s [all about the FAQs]( What is the vetting process for bringing refugees into America? President Trump has proposed extreme vetting of refugees entering the country. Here’s how the system has worked in the past: There are 20 steps. They include an interview with the UN, the State Department, and a Homeland Security officer. Plus, multiple background checks, fingerprint screenings, and cultural orientation classes.
