Is this email not displaying correctly? [View it in your browser.] [SHARE THIS] [SHARE THIS] Skimm for January 19th Skimm’d while making our coffee [just a bit stronger than usual] QUOTE OF THE DAY “Breaking News: “The Office” returning to NBC. Wait, sorry. I meant “Will and Grace” (Typo)” - [Steve Carell] being a big tease. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] [Insta This] TICK TOCK ON THE CLOCK THE STORY The Senate’s in a [mad dash to tie up some ends] before President-elect Donald Trump moves into the White House tomorrow. TELL ME MORE. Yesterday, a bunch of Trump’s cabinet picks showed up on the Hill for their confirmation hearings. Here are some you need to know about... [Rep. Tom Price (R-GA)]...as in Trump’s pick to lead Health and Human Services, and the guy who’d help repeal and replace Obamacare. When asked how he’d do that, Price didn’t give many details. When asked about potentially shady stock trades he made while in Congress, he was clear - he’s [‘done nothing wrong.’] [Scott Pruitt]...as in the Oklahoma Attorney General that Trump’s tapped to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. Good news, he thinks climate change is real. He’s just not sure how much humans contribute to it. He’s also [sued] the EPA more than a dozen times for overstepping its reach. So odds are he has a few ideas for some changes he’d like to make. [Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC)]...as in the one up for the UN ambassador job. She said she’d be tough on Russia, and she’s on board with NATO - two positions that don’t seem to align with what Trump’s said recently. But she does agree with him on Israel. Haley said that the US’s decision to abstain from a recent UN resolution vote was a [“kick in the gut.”] [Rick Perry]...as in the former Texas gov who Trump’s picked to head up the Energy Department. The job would put him in charge of coal, gas, and the country’s nuclear energy and weapons. He also [reportedly didn’t understand] that this was the job he’d signed up for. The Senate might have a few questions about that he sits down with them later today.  ANYTHING ELSE? Time will tell [if these nominees] get the green light, but it’s rare for the Senate to block a cabinet nomination. Here’s one person who looks like he’s in the clear…yesterday, the Senate moved closer to approving [retired Marine Gen. James Mattis] for the defense secretary job. Baby steps. theSKIMM Looks like the president-elect will be walking into the White House on day one with an incomplete team, which is…[unusual]. And maybe a little inconvenient. THE *: [Here’s your Skimm] on going through the change from President Obama to President-elect Trump Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] REPEAT AFTER ME... WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR CO-WORKER INVITES YOU TO HIS GOODBYE HAPPY HOUR... So long, farewell. President Obama’s saying the same. Yesterday, he [held his final press conference.]And he covered a lot of ground. He defended his decision [to cut Chelsea Manning’s prison sentence short.] Manning’s the former Army analyst who leaked a lot of confidential docs to WikiLeaks back in 2010. She was supposed to serve 35 years in prison. She’ll get out in seven, because Obama says her sentence was [“very disproportionate”] to sentences for similar cases. He also warned that the chances of a [two-state solution] for Israelis and Palestinians (where both would have their own states on a map) “may be passing.” The international community has been trying to make this happen for decades. Now President-elect Donald Trump will inherit the problem, and it’s looking like he might [not have the same approach.] Obama also said he still plans to speak out when it comes to defending the country’s “core values” aka freedom of the press, voting rights, fighting discrimination. But first he’s planning to take a little ‘me’ time and not hear himself “talk so darn much.” Coming to a spa near you… Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING... [George HW and Barbara Bush.] They’re both in the hospital. Yesterday, the former president was moved to intensive care after being hospitalized last weekend for breathing problems. A family rep says he underwent a procedure to open up his airways, and all’s well. Also yesterday, the former first lady was hospitalized “as a precaution” after she was feeling tired and coughing a lot. Both Bushes are in their 90s. George has had a lot of health issues in recent years and suffers from a form of Parkinson’s. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] WHAT PEOPLE ARE KEEPING AN EYE ON… An [avalanche in Italy]. Yesterday, an avalanche buried a hotel in a ski town in central Italy, leaving at least 30 people missing. The avalanche appears to have been triggered by a series of earthquakes that hit the area yesterday. Two people have been rescued so far, and rescue operations are still going on. But blizzards and strong winds have made things tricky. This region has been hit by dozens of aftershocks after a major earthquake last summer that killed almost 300 people. WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR WEEKEND GUEST WON’T LEAVE… Getting a little too comfortable? So is Gambia’s president. Last month, Gambia (small West African country that’s neighbors with Senegal) held a presidential election. The current prez has been in power for over two decades and has said he’d rule for a [“billion years.”] Gambians are not on board with this plan. They voted him out in an election late last year. And apparently he’s having trouble letting go. He’s been refusing to leave office, saying there were ‘irregularities’ in the voting. The newly-elected prez is supposed to take office today. So yesterday, Senegalese forces [started knock knock knocking on Gambia’s door.]They’re part of a group of West African nations that work together on things like economic growth. And now it seems they’re also getting political. As in the group of nations has been threatening military intervention to force the current president out. They gave him until midnight last night. Unclear what exactly will happen now if he still refuses to leave, but it looks like things could become violent. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR TECHIE FRIEND TELLS YOU SHE GOT A RAISE... Was it as big as the one your co-worker got? Yesterday, the US Labor Dept. said it’s [suing software company Oracle] for giving white male employees bigger paychecks than other people in similar roles. And for giving Asians a leg up when hiring for certain tech jobs. Oracle’s just the latest tech company (think: Facebook, Google) to come under fire for [playing demographic favorites], often at the expense of women and minorities. Not cool, especially when you’re a company that gets paid by the federal government to work on certain projects. Oracle’s saying it’s all “false” and the lawsuit is “politically motivated.” Meanwhile its HR dept is breaking out the stress balls. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU FEEL OLD... [This is Dylan McKay’s son.] Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] GOING THROUGH THE CHANGE T-1 day until President-elect Donald Trump and America officially say “I do.” All week we’ve been giving you a sneak peak of the who and what to expect from the Trump Administration. Now, a minute for [President Obama]… [The highlights…]as in nominating the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice, the Osama bin Laden raid, opening up relations with Cuba, same-sex marriage, and the Paris climate deal. [The lowlights…]as in Healthcare.gov, the Benghazi attack, the government shutdown, the rise of ISIS. [Here’s a look] back at the good, the bad, and the ugly of his eight years in office. PS: We also have your Skimm on the who’s who of [Team Trump], and what the new prez’s [first 100 days] will look like…[all in one place.] Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] SKIMM GIFT Skimm HQ wants you to channel your inner pop star and go to the GRAMMY’s. We’re thinking you and a plus one. Three nights in LA. Two tickets to the big night. [Enter here.] SKIMM LIFE Snapchat: not just for your younger cousin.
