Is this email not displaying correctly? [View it in your browser.] [SHARE THIS] [SHARE THIS] Skimm for January 17th Skimm’d over a bowl of chili and “The Bachelor” QUOTE OF THE DAY “Eight men” - [A group] that’s got as much wealth combined as half the world’s population. Think: $426 billion total. Short change. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] [Insta This] CALL ME TWEET ME IF YOU WANNA REACH ME THE STORY President-elect Donald Trump spent the long weekend [speaking his mind] on a couple of things. WHAT DID HE SAY? Trump had a few interviews and a few Twitter feuds. Here are some of the people and things he’s not happy with... [Rep. John Lewis (D-GA)]...as in the civil rights icon and Trump got into it. Lewis said he doesn’t think Trump is a “legitimate” president because he feels Russia’s interference in the election helped Trump win. Trump responded by tweeting that Lewis is [“all talk”] and should focus on fixing his “crime infested” district. Atlanta residents, who Lewis represents, [did not appreciate]. Neither did a lot of lawmakers, who say Trump disrespected a civil rights hero on MLK weekend. Now, a few Dems are changing their Inauguration Day RSVP to [‘not attending.’] [The EU]...as in the squad of 28 countries that Trump thinks is about to fail. Over the weekend, he said more countries will file for divorce à la Brexit. And that NATO is “obsolete.” That’s when US Sec. of State John Kerry stepped in to say comments like this are “inappropriate.” And the EU stepped in to say [‘merde,’ ‘mamma mia,’ and ‘das not gut.’] [John Brennan]...as in the CIA director and Trump aren’t doing trust falls just yet. Last week, [unverified docs] hit the Interwebs alleging lots of things, including that Russia has been “assisting” Trump for years. Trump suggested maybe “the intelligence agencies” leaked the docs. Brennan said ‘need you to have a little more faith in us.’ Then Trump took to Twitter to ask whether Brennan leaked the “fake news.” So…back to square one. ANYTHING ELSE? One thing that’s not getting heat from Trump? [Russia.] In recent years, the US has slapped Russia with sanctions for things like trying to [interfere with the US election] and its involvement in the [Ukraine conflict]. Over the weekend, Trump said he’d drop those sanctions if Russia reduces its nuclear weapons and helps the US fight terrorism. Add this to the list of stories about Trump and Russia that have people doing a double take. theSKIMM T-3 days until Trump moves into the White House. It’s looking like the new normal for presidential communications will be hitting ‘refresh’ on Twitter.  THE *: [Here’s your inauguration Skimm] on the who’s who of Team Trump, his 100 day plan, and a look back at the Obama years. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] REPEAT AFTER ME... WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU SEE ALL THE VIPS [‘GRAMMING FROM DAVOS]... Here’s one guy who prob won’t be there. Yesterday, South Korean prosecutors said they [want a warrant to arrest Lee Jae-yong], heir to the Samsung throne and vice chairman of the company. This has to do with the [massive corruption scandal] that’s been a pain in the country’s political back for months. It centers around SK’s President Park Geun-hye, who’s accused of doing things like sharing confidential gov docs with a close friend and helping that friend cheat businesses out of tens of millions of dollars. South Koreans are not pleased. Last month, legislators [voted to impeach her.] And now prosecutors say the Samsung heir has been caught up in the whole thing too. The heir’s accused of bribing the president and her friend in exchange for government approval of a Samsung business deal. Not a good look for a company that’s the largest smartphone maker in the world and a huge contributor to South Korea’s economy. The company says ‘erroneous.’ Prosecutors still have to get approval to actually arrest him. Samsung’s hoping for a big ‘denied’ stamp. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU’VE BEEN SITTING ON THE TARMAC FOR OVER AN HOUR… Time to get out of here. Yesterday, Oman (country that’s neighbors with Saudi Arabia) said it will play temporary host to [10 Guantanamo Bay inmates] who’ve just been released. Guantanamo Bay - aka Gitmo - is the [controversial US naval base] in Cuba that President Obama has been trying to close literally since his first day in office. Congress hasn’t been on board with the shutdown plans. So Obama’s been cutting down on the inmate population over time by sending detainees overseas, where governments in places like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan agree to take them on. There were more than 240 prisoners when Obama took office. Now there’s less than 50. But Obama’s time’s basically up. President-elect Donald Trump has suggested he plans on keeping the remaining prisoners right where they are. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING... Nightclub shootings around the world. Yesterday, a gunman [opened fire at a music festival] being held at a nightclub in a popular resort near Cancun. At least five people died, including one woman who was killed during a stampede when people tried to flee the club. It’s unclear what led to the shooting. Officials are still looking for the suspect. Also yesterday, Turkey officials [arrested a suspect] in connection with the New Year’s Eve nightclub attack in Istanbul. 39 people were killed, and authorities have been looking for the gunman ever since. Meanwhile, yesterday [the wife of the Pulse nightclub shooter was arrested.] Last year, her husband killed 49 people when he opened fire inside the Orlando, FL gay club. He pledged allegiance to ISIS during the attack and was later killed by police. Now, his wife’s been charged for things like holding up the investigation. Her lawyer says ‘not true.’ WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO COMES TO WORK WITH A SORE THROAT... Too much yelling at the TV? Over the weekend, four NFL teams got [one step closer to the Super Bowl.] The New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons, and Green Bay Packers are all still in it to win it. Coming up, it’s Patriots v Steelers and Falcons v Packers to determine who goes to the big game. The Steelers are focusing on keeping a really low profile in the meantime. [Or, not.] Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] GOING THROUGH THE CHANGE On Friday, ‘Murica says bye to President Obama and swears in President-elect Donald Trump. Check back here all week for more on [who and what to expect] from the Trump Administration. First up… [Jared Kushner:] Senior adviser. He’ll have Trump’s ear on domestic and foreign policy issues. Kushner is stepping down as CEO of his family’s real-estate company to take the job. He’s also married to Trump’s daughter, Ivanka. Many think his appointment violates anti-nepotism laws that block relatives from taking gov positions. Team Trump says, ‘not the case’ - that only applies to cabinet positions. PS:[Here is your full inauguration week Skimm ]with a look back at the Obama years, the faces of Team Trump, and what the new prez’s first-100-day checklist looks like. Skimm This[Like Us][Tweet with Us] SKIMM SLEEP [Circadian rhythm:] Not a calculus problem. Your internal 24-hour clock. It controls when you feel most tired and awake during the day. Think: when you’ve finished lunch and all you want is a nap. When you’re binge-watching “The Crown” at 2AM and your eyes start drooping. Turn off the laptop. Get those zzz’s. Want to upgrade your bedroom game? [This mattress and this pillow] are a good place to start. PS…[we got you a little discount on the mattress.]  SKIMM GIFT We want you to celebrate The Big Game in style (psst: the one at the end of the football season with the commercials you actually want to watch).
