Skimm'd while NOVEMBER 17, 2017 Skimm'd while ------------------------------------------------------

Skimm'd while [avoiding chores]( NOVEMBER 17, 2017 [READ IN BROWSER]( [theSkimm]( [theSkimm]( [Share theSkimm]( Skimm'd while [avoiding chores]( --------------------------------------------------------------- QUOTE OF THE DAY "Price upon request" - [Goop]( is recommending a personalized yellow submarine as a holiday gift. It's probably reasonable. GET YOUR TAX TOGETHER The Story The House GOP is [passing tax bills]( and taking names. So it's official? Not yet. The Senate still has to sign off - and since the Senate GOP has its own tax plan, there will be some notes. Would I pay more taxes? Depends how much money you make, where you live, and when we're talking about. A lot of people are expected to pay the same or less [for the next five years.]( After that, it could be more. And if you live in a place with high state taxes - like [NY, NJ, and CA]( - you won't get to write off as much. What else should I know? The corporate tax is going way down, making it more attractive to do business in the US. But a lot of personal deductions - for things like medical expenses and mortgages - will be reduced or cut entirely. What does the GOP say? That this bill is making everything simpler by cleaning up the tax code. And that there will be more money in people's pockets overall. What do Dems say? That this is mostly a handout to corporations and wealthy Americans. Hard pass. What now? The Senate's inbox just pinged. Trump wants this done by Christmas. theSkimm This is another step forward in the biggest tax overhaul since the '80s - and could be Trump's first big legislative win if it passes the Senate. Either way, this affects you. Everyone pays taxes. PS: We talked with House Speaker Paul Ryan about this bill. [Watch here.]( REPEAT AFTER ME... What to say when your lunch opens in your bag... Messy. Last night, [the Keystone Pipeline leaked]( hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil in South Dakota. The Keystone Pipeline transports oil from Canada to Texas. If the name sounds familiar, it's because there have been protests in the last few years against expanding it. Supporters say it brings more jobs to the US. Critics say it's bad for the environment, and can lead to oil spills. Like this one. Officials are looking into how this recent spill happened. And emergency crews have shut down part of the pipeline for now. --------------------------------------------------------------- What to say when you hear "gosh darn it, people like me"... Not laughing. Yesterday, a radio host accused Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) of [sexually harassing her]( back in 2006. She and Franken were visiting US troops in the Middle East, back when he was a comedian. She says Franken forcibly kissed her during a rehearsal and groped her while she slept. Franken says he remembers things differently, but apologized. Now Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) [wants to investigate]( - and Franken says he'll "gladly cooperate." BTW - Roy Moore's [still around](. And the list of women accusing the Alabama Senate candidate of sexual misconduct [keeps on growing.]( --------------------------------------------------------------- What to say while fighting over what Netflix series to start... Here's who else can't agree. Yesterday, the [bribery trial]( Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) ended in a mistrial. [Here's what happened]( after Menendez was elected in '06, a doctor started flying Menendez around on his private jet, and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Menendez's reelection campaign. Menendez didn't report the flights, which might've violated Senate rules. In exchange for all this, Menendez allegedly pressured the State Dept. to help the doc out with some business interests abroad. Menendez is the first sitting senator tried for federal bribery in over 30 years. But the jury couldn't agree on a verdict. Unclear if the prosecutors will try, try again. --------------------------------------------------------------- What to say when you see [Tesla's new semitruck...]( This could change things. Yesterday, it came out that researchers found CTE in a former NFL player [while he was alive](. CTE: the degenerative brain disease that's been linked to repeated hits to the head that come with many sports. Until now, researchers thought you could only diagnose it after death. But in this case, researchers ID'd a protein linked to CTE in this player before he died. His autopsy confirmed he had the disease. This could be a major breakthrough for CTE detection. --------------------------------------------------------------- What to say when your invite got "lost in the mail"... [Wish I scored an invite to this.]( SKIMM LIFE SKIMM TO GO For when you're home for Thanksgiving... ["Bonfire" by Krysten Ritter]( will keep you busy. It's about a woman that goes back to her hometown after a long time away. Think Erin Brockovich, but with all kinds of mystery. For when your inbox is all holiday invites... Everyone appreciates a bottle of wine. [Here's how]( to choose vino for every occasion, plus some of our fave bottles. Like this [French white.]( *PS This is an affiliate partner, which means if you purchase or sign up, theSkimm may get something in return. Thanks.
