Over what? Another abortion case. Yesterday, the Supremes heard oral arguments on whether or not a federal law requiring hospitals to provide emergency care overrides Idaho’s strict abortion ban. The Idaho law offers no exceptions for an abortion other than to save the life of the mother, leaving doctors with no choice but to wait until a pregnant person’s condition deteriorates. The Biden administration argues that the [Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act]( (EMTALA) requires Idaho to provide emergency abortion care at federally-funded hospitals. Now, it’s up to the high court to weigh in. What are they saying? The court’s liberal justices seemed to side with the Biden admin. They [questioned]( how much a pregnant person should suffer before they’re considered to be on the verge of death and doctors can intervene. Several conservative justices appeared to be [skeptical of the lawsuit](. They considered whether the federal law encroached on state rights and what it would mean for the “[unborn child](.” The Supremes’ decision could affect at least a dozen other states with strict abortion bans. theSkimm A ruling on this case is expected in late June, potentially along with another case that stands to affect access to the abortion pill. These pending rulings could shape health care for millions of women and keep abortion at the center of the 2024 presidential election.
