Careful planning and advance booking almost always netted savvy travelers amazing points redemptions on pricey airfare or decadent suites they might not be able to afford with a cash rate. But in the new era of what seems like regularly occurring points and miles devaluations, the points-versus-cash debate gets a bit dicier. Sure, points rewards often come with added benefits on certain platforms (it’s [my go-to way to avoid resort fees]( on stays at Hyatt and Hilton hotels). But cash sometimes isn’t a bad deal either — or even [using some points and miles to pay the taxes and fees]( that still get charged on an award redemption. There’s no clear answer here, and as with most things in life, it usually comes down to doing what works for you and your needs at the time.
